Men's Ice Hockey Earns Regular Season Championship With Win Over Fredonia

OSWEGO, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Men's Hockey team honored their six seniors tonight as they faced off against the Fredonia Blue Devils. The Lakers won in every facet of the game, handing the Blue Devils a nine goal loss with a shutout in goal by Cal Schell. The men clinched the number one seed for the SUNYAC tournament with their win tonight, and clinched the SUNYAC regular season title.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego State 9 (16-8-1, 12-4 SUNYAC), Fredonia 0 (7-17-0, 5-11-0 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Getting the Lakers on the board early was Connor Smart, with a goal just six minutes in. Smart was assisted by Garett Clegg and Ryan Bunka

  • Immediately following the faceoff, Matt McQuade passed to Daniel Colabufo who was able to find Tommy Cahill, who hit the top right corner of the net and gave the Lakers the early two point lead. 

  • Drake Semrad scored another first period goal for the Lakers, just under 11 minutes into the period. Semrad was assisted by Trent Grimshaw and Connor Sleeth. The Lakers took the early 3-0 lead over the Blue Devils.

  • With just under four minutes remaining in the first, Alex DiCarlo was able to find the back of the net, giving the Lakers the four point lead. DiCarlo was assisted by Drake Semrad and Shane Bull.

  • The Lakers went into the second period holding a four point lead. Cal Schell recorded six saves in goal for the period, as the defense held the Blue Devils in check. 

  • Opening up the second period, the Blue Devils decided to get a fresh set of legs in at goal, pulling their first string goalie. 

  • Seven minutes and 50 seconds into the second period, Connor Smart scored his second goal of the evening, receiving his assist from Matt McQuade and Ryan Bunka. The Lakers would lead by five.

  • Connor Smart got a hat trick this evening, scoring his third goal of the evening with four minutes and 49 seconds remaining in the period. Smart was assisted by Noah Bull and Garrett Clegg

  • With just 53 seconds left in the second period, Daniel Colabufo scored on the two on one fast break, receiving the assist from Tommy Cahill.

  • The Lakers would take a seven to nothing lead going into the third period. Cal Schell recorded nine more saves in the second, giving him 15 through two. 

  • The Blue Devils made another change in goal going into the third, rolling with their third string goalie to start the final period. 

  • Not even a minute and a half into the period, Ben Addison was able to score the goal from just inside the offensive zone. Addison was assisted by Tommy Cahill and Trent Grimshaw.

  • Just 30 seconds later, Garrett Clegg would score his first goal of the season, giving the Lakers a nine point lead. Clegg was assisted by Troy Robillard

  • The Lakers held on to take a 9-0 victory over Fredonia, clinching the number one seed for the SUNYAC tournament. 

WHAT'S NEXT

The men will host the winner of the Geneseo and Fredonia matchup, which is set to take place on Wednesday, February 22nd. Oswego will play on Saturday, February 25th at 7PM.
