OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Men's Basketball team hosted the number five seeded New Paltz Hawks this afternoon for the SUNYAC Semifinal match. The Lakers advanced to their second consecutive SUNYAC title game with a five point win over the Hawks. Devin Green was the difference maker, connecting on five threes in the second half to give the Lakers the edge over New Paltz. The men have now won TWENTY consecutive games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Early on, the Lakers struggled to connect on their field goal attempts. Despite this, they were able to keep the game tight as both teams went back and forth in the first seven minutes of play. The Hawks started gaining momentum, which forced Coach Leone to take a timeout trailing 12-15.

Defense was the tale of the first half, as both teams struggled to put the ball in the net. The Lakers forced five turnovers on defense, while holding the Hawks to just 35.7% from the field. Oswego dominated the offensive glass, tallying ten offensive rebounds in the half.

Despite their troubles against the Hawks defense, the Lakers would take a two point lead going into halftime, leading 27-25.

Stat leaders at the half: Cartier Bowman and Jeremiah Sparks with eight points each. Sparks also led the team in rebounds with six, and in assists with two.

Devin Green started to heat up in the second half, hitting three of his six three point attempts in the first eleven minutes of the half. The Lakers would take a five point lead, leading 49-44.

Jeremiah Sparks connected on back-to-back baskets to extend the Lakers lead to nine with just five minutes remaining in the game.

Oswego continued to click on offense, with Devin Green sinking another three, which gave the Lakers a 12 point lead.

Green continued to put the team on his back, connecting on his fifth three of the second half with just a minute and 22 seconds remaining in the second half. Oswego led the Hawks by 11.

The Lakers held off a last minute surge from the Hawks as they secured the five point victory.

Four Lakers recorded double digit points this evening, Jeremiah Sparks (21), Devin Green (17), Cartier Bowman (13), and Kaleb Cook (12). Sparks led the team with seven assists on the evening, while tying with Cartier Bowman with seven rebounds.

Leading the way on defense with three steals a piece was Devin Green, Cartier Bowman, Jeremiah Sparks, and Ahkee Anderson.

The Lakers will stay at home to take on the Brockport Golden Eagles tomorrow afternoon in the SUNYAC Championship game. The tip-off is scheduled for 4pm.
