Third Period Heroics Forces Overtime Against Knights

OSWEGO, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Men's Hockey team fell to the Geneseo Knights in an exciting game that was decided in overtime after Oswego scored three unanswered goals in the third period.

Final Score: Oswego State 3 (12-8-1, 8-4 SUNYAC), Geneseo 4 (14-5-2, 8-3-1 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  •  Oswego surrendered two goals in the first period, but outshot the Knights 17-8. Both teams had two powerplay attempts in the first period, but were unsuccessful.

  • Oswego had several opportunities in the second period, keeping constant pressure in the Knights' zone, but Geneseo's Matt Petizian made several quality saves in the first half of the period. The Knights added a goal with 12:27 remaining.

  • While scoreless in the second period, the Lakers demonstrated their penalty kill skill, Fending off back-to-back 5-on-3 Geneseo power plays.

  • With 10:08 remaining, Oswego finally broke through Petizian on their 40th shot of the game, with a goal from Matt McQuade off an assist from Ryan Dickinson.

  • Daniel Colabufo cut the deficit to just one with a goal a few minutes after McQuade, off an assist from Alex DiCarlo.

  • With 4:08 remaining, the Lakers were awarded a power play after a hooking call on the Knights. Quinn Warmuth buried a goal in the back of the net with 3:33 remaining. This tied the game at three, electrifying the Oswego fans in attendance.

  • After the incredible Laker third period, the game went to overtime.

  • The Lakers had a few chances in overtime, out shooting the Knights by a margin of 6-1, the Knights ultimately scored the game-winner off of a broken play that saw a penalty expire and sent Geneseo on a breakaway. 

  • Despite the loss, Oswego went 2-4 on their power play chances, getting back on track after a tough few games getting goals off of power play chances.

The men will travel to Brockport for a matchup with the Golden Eagles on Saturday, February 4.
