Baseball Looks Towards SUNYAC Play After Florida Trip

LAKE MYRTLE, FL  – The Oswego State Baseball team completed their RussMatt Central Florida Invitational road trip on Saturday, falling to the 12-1 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays after a promising first inning. Wild pitches, errors, and hit batters were the difference in the game, as Johns Hopkins capitalized on each mistake and took control of the game in the sixth inning.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego 9, Johns Hopkins University 16

Location:  Lake Myrtle, FL

Records:  Oswego 5-8, Johns Hopkins 12-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Oswego started off the top of the first inning with a seven-run rally. The scoring was kicked off by a two-run RBI single from Julian Drew. Tishaw Featherstone also had a two-run RBI single, which was followed by Frank Levanti reaching on an error that ended with Featherstone scoring. Both Tim Schinto and Jelan Hamer continued the scoring with RBI singles, and the Lakers ended the first inning up 7-0.

  • The Blue Jays started to come back, scoring four runs in the second inning, and added a fifth run in the third inning.

  • The Blue Jays tied the game in the fourth off of some aggressive base running and a wild pitch.

  • The fifth inning was kept tied by Larry Citrola, who had a few high level strikeouts.

  • The Blue Jays broke through Citrola in the bottom of the sixth. A few errant pitches and a few bloop singles gave the Blue Jays a 10-7 lead.

  • Oswego had runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the seventh. Jelani Hamer grounded out to the pitcher which resulted in the runners advancing, cutting the score to 10-8. However, that was the only run to get pushed across in the seventh inning for the Lakers.

  • Johns Hopkins' Isaiah Winikur hit a full count, two out grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to put the game at 14-8. The Blue Jays added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

  • While Oswego was able to score a run in the top of the ninth, it wasn't enough, and the Blue Jays came away with the 16-9 win.

Oswego State will travel to SUNY Cortland for a three game set with the Red Dragons that starts on Friday, March 24. This series will be the first SUNYAC series of the season for the Lakers.
