Men's Lacrosse Sits Third in Conference After Loss To Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Men's Lacrosse team fell to the Cortland Red Dragons on Wednesday, marking their second SUNYAC loss of the season.

Final Score: Oswego State 5 (6-5, 4-2 SUNYAC), Cortland 22 (11-4, 5-1 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Red Dragons, similarly to Geneseo, have established themselves as one of the dominant forces in the SUNYAC conference, and showed that early, outscoring Oswego 9-1 in the first period. The lone Oswego goal came from Liam Sexton with 2:12 left in the period.

  • The second period was the most competitive of the game, with both teams scoring three goals apiece.

  • The first of Oswego's three goals came from Gavin Elston with 11:52 left on a man-up advantage, with an assist from Max Brodman. The second goal was scored by Sexton with 9:38 remaining, also on a man-up advantage, and with Brodman's second assist of the game. The third came with 2:14 remaining, this time with Connor Aspinal finding the back of the net off an assist from Corey O'Connor.

  • The Red Dragons pulled even further away in the third period, outscoring the Lakers 7-1. The only Laker goal was scored by Jason Dongelewic.

  • Cortland added three more goals in the fourth to take a statement 22-5 victory.

WHAT'S NEXT

Despite two straight losses to the two best teams in the SUNYAC conference, Oswego still sits third in the standings with Oneonta's loss to New Paltz in overtime coming moments after the Lakers' matchup with Cortland. Oswego has one regular season game left, a matchup with the Potsdam Bears, a team eliminated from playoff contention, in Potsdam on Saturday, April 29.
