POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Oswego State Men's Lacrosse team narrowly fended off the Potsdam Bears on Saturday to bring their SUNYAC record to 5-2. The Lakers took advantage of a big first half to hang on against a determined opponent.

HOW IT HAPPENED

With 13:37 left in the first period, the Lakers struck first, off an unassisted goal from Jack Delany.

Exactly two minutes later, Liam Sexton scored to put the Lakers up 2-0.

Sexton assisted on the next Oswego goal that came from Corey O'Connor on a man up advantage with 3:53 left.

Less than a minute later, with 3:37 left, Logan Prescott scored an unassisted goal to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. The Bears scored once before the break to make it 4-1 at the end of the first period.

Potsdam carved into the Oswego lead in the opening minutes of the second period with a goal, making it 4-2.

Delany connected with O'Connor in front of the net, and O'Connor scored with 6:58 left in the second period. 18 seconds later, O'Connor scored his third goal of the game.

The Bears were able to find the back of the net with just over two minutes remaining, but Oswego answered back with 57 seconds to play in the first half, off an unassisted goal from Trey Jones. Oswego entered the break with a 7-3 lead.

Potsdam opened the third period with a goal to cut the lead to three.

Jason Dongelewic made it a 8-4 lead with a goal of his own with 14:01 remaining.

The Bears continued to chip away at the Lakers, scoring two goals in the middle of the third period to close the gap to two.

Hayden Coney made it a 9-6 game with 6:30 to go in the third period.

Gavin Elston assisted O'Connor on his fourth goal of the game with 5:55 remaining. Still, Potsdam doggedly remained in the fight, and they scored twice to make it 10-8.

Despite maintaining a two-goal lead, the Bears were surging after the third period, and had the home crowd on their side.. The fourth period began with a Potsdam goal that cut the lead to 10-9.

Finally, Laker goal-leader Gavin Elston scored a crucial goal with 11:34 remaining to reclaim a two-goal lead. This briefly slowed the Bear momentum.

With 9:16 remaining, the Bears narrowed the game to one. The Lakers called a timeout.

Sexton scored off an assist from Delany with 8:24 remaining, pushing the lead back to 12-10. Less than a minute later, the Bears scored again. With seven minutes to go, the fourth period felt like the equivalent of two boxers punching back and forth.

With less than five minutes remaining, Potsdam broke through to the scoring stalemate to tie the game at 12.

Max Brodman made his impact on the game with 2:34 left, feeding Delany at a perfect angle to score and give Oswego the lead. This forced Potsdam to take a timeout with just over a minute remaining. They called another timeout almost immediately after play resumed.

The last minute of the game was intense, with Potsdam getting off a shot that was deflected away. Oswego gained possession in the ensuing scramble, and the Bears committed a penalty with ten seconds remaining to sink their chances of forcing overtime. Oswego hung on to win 13-12.

The Lakers have already clinched the third seed in the SUNYAC playoffs, the Lakers will take on the Cortland Red Dragons on Wednesday, May 3rd at 4:00PM in Cortland.
