Softball Splits, Comes Back From Tough Game One Loss

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego State Softball team hosted the Fredonia Blue Devils this afternoon. After dropping game one by double digits, the Lakers rallied late in game two to split the day with Fredonia. 

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego 2, Fredonia 15; Oswego 8, Fredonia 5

Location:  Laker Softball Field, Oswego, NY

Records:  Oswego State 9-23-1, Fredonia 6-25, 5-8 SUNYAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Game one got off rocky for the Lakers, with Fredonia putting up 11 runs in the top of the second. 

  • In the next inning, the Blue Devils tacked on another two runs to give them a 13 run lead over Oswego. 

  • Oswego got on the board in the bottom of the third, with Fredonia walking Emma Grasso with bases loaded, advancing Tai Smith to home.

  • Samantha Morgan then hit a single through the left side, advancing Madison Hoeflich to home plate, making the score 13-2. 

  • Oswego gave up another pair of runs in the next inning, and would drop game one 15-2 through five innings of play. 

  • Despite the loss, Hoeflich went 3-3 at the plate, earning one run for the team. 

Game 2

  • Things weren't looking good for the Lakers in game two, surrendering three runs in the top of the first inning. 

  • The game would be scoreless until the Blue Devils added one more run in the top of the fourth inning. 

  • Fredonia tacked on one more run in the top of the fifth, which proved to be the final run for the Blue Devils. Oswego would take things over from here. 

  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Lakers scored five runs to tie the game at five. 

  • Singles by Ariana Guinassi and Adriana Marini set the Lakers up with runners on first and second. They then stole second and third, setting the Lakers up for their first run of the game. 

  • Madison Hoeflich grounded out to the shortstop, which advanced Guinassi for the first run of the game. 

  • An error by the Blue Devils allowed two runners to score, making the score 5-3. Scoring for the Lakers was Mattison Phinney and Marini. 

  • Ellie Mahoney then singled through the left side, bringing in Christina Kania for the score. 

  • In the next at-bat, Kylie Detz singled up the middle, tying the game with a run scored by Samantha Morgan

  • The Lakers took a three run lead in the bottom of the sixth, which would be the final runs scored for the Lakers tonight. 

  • Oswego was set with bases loaded, following two walks and a single by Madison Hoeflich

  • A wild pitch by Fredonia allowed Guianassi to score and give the Lakers their first lead of the afternoon. 

  • A fielder's choice by the Blue Devils allowed Hoeflich to score and give Oswego a two run lead. 

  • Phinney stole home to extend the Lakers lead to three, and sealed the deal for the Lakers in game two. 

  • Phinney and Detz led the Lakers at the plate, with two hits each. Phinney added a pair of runs for the Lakers, and Detz earned an RBI. Maria Lutz recorded six strikeouts in game two. 

WHAT'S NEXT

Oswego State will host the Buffalo State Bengals on Friday, April 28th for a double header matchup. Game one is slated for 1pm.
