Baseball Splits Double Header With Oneonta

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego State Baseball team hosted the Oneonta Red Dragons for a double header matchup this afternoon. The Lakers split the series on the day, defeating Oneonta in game one, and dropping game two. 

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego 5, Oneonta 4, Oswego 8, Oneonta 12

Location: Laker Baseball Field, Oswego, NY

Records: Oswego 18-16, 9-5 SUNYAC, Oneonta 23-11, 9-5 SUNYAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Oneonta got on the board first, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. 

  • The Lakers would get their first run in the bottom of the third, with a single by Brian Brezosky bringing in Blake VanDreason for the score. Oswego trailed 3-1 at this point. 

  • Three and a half innings went by until the next score occurred. Oswego scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, tying the game at three. 

  • A bunt by Anthony Barone brought in the first run for Oswego, advancing CJ McCarthy home for the score. 

  • VanDreason scored the second run of the inning off a passed ball by the Red Dragons. 

  • In the next inning, VanDreason singled down the infield line, bringing in Jacob Levine for the score. 

  • Next at-bat, Barone singled to third base, which brought in McCarthy for his second score of the game. 

  • The Red Dragons had a chance to tie the game at five in the top of the ninth, trailing by two before the inning began. Oneonta scored one runner and Anthony Van Fossen struck out the final batter, sealing the deal for Oswego.

  • The Lakers took game one in a narrow one, winning 5-4. 

  • Barone led the team at the plate, recording three hits and two RBIs. Kieran Finnegan got it done on the mound, tossing seven strikeouts in the win. 

Game 2

  • Oswego started off strong in game two, scoring the first run of the game off an error by Oneonta. Julian Drew scored the unearned run for the Lakers. 

  • The Red Dragons would take the lead from Oswego in the top of the third, scoring two runs, making the score 2-1.

  • Oneonta added another run to their lead in the top of the fifth, which resulted in an explosive fifth inning from the Lakers. 

  • Oswego added five runs in the inning, jumping out to a 6-3 lead.

  • The Lakers had runners on first and second following Drew being hit by a pitch, and a single by Jacob Levine. An error by Oneonta gave Oswego bases loaded with two outs. 

  • Oneonta walked Blake VanDreason, which brought in Tishawn Featherstone for the first run. 

  • Greg Carullo immediately after recorded a single through the right field, earning 2 RBIs with runs scored by Owen Parliment and Levine. Both runs were unearned runs. 

  • The final run of the inning came from a single by Tim Schinto, which brought in VanDreason for the unearned score. 

  • The Red Dragons would take over from here though, and score nine more runs to the Lakers' two. 

  • The final runs by Oswego came from errors by the Red Dragons, and the final score would be 12-8. Hamer and McCarthy scored the final runs for Oswego. 

  • Featherstone, Carullo, and Schinto led the Lakers at the plate in game two, with each recording two hits. Featherstone added a run, Carullo added two RBIs, and Schinto added an RBI. 

WHAT'S NEXT

Oswego State will wrap up their series with Oneonta, with a match scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. The game is set for 1pm on Saturday, April 29th. The Lakers and Red Dragons currently sit deadlocked at third place, tomorrow's single game will decide the third and fourth place seeding for the SUNYAC Baseball Championship.
