SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Oswego State Men's Soccer team today took on the Skidmore Thoroughbreds for their first game of the 2023 season. The scrappy game ended in a tie with a collective seven yellow cards being handed out including four for the Lakers including a team yellow card at the 90 minute mark and three for the Thoroughbreds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the first ever meeting between the Lakers and Thoroughbreds proved to be a goalie battle.

4:34 into the contest, Kyle Gehnrich shot one wide of the net, earning the first scoring opportunity for the Lakers in the contest.

Just two minutes later, fellow captain Kieran Gilroy took his attempt at the goal and it was saved.

Within 20 seconds of each other, Gilroy and Brendan Murphy both had shots saved by the Skidmore net-minder.

At the end of the first half, the first yellow card was given out to Jason Wuytack, this started a trend.

At 50:43, Gilroy was presented with another scoring opportunity and sailed it high. After another opportunity just over three minutes later for Gilroy to no avail, frustrations seemed to start setting in.

At 56:14 two more yellows were given out one for Oswego's Gilroy and the other to Skidmore.

Not two minutes later, the Lakers and Thoroughbreds were given ANOTHER pair of yellow cards, this time to JP Moquillaza.

At 62:21' Gilroy has yet another shot saved by the Skidmore goalkeeper.

With some other small scoring chances throughout the half, neither team was able to take the goose egg off of the board.

At 82:59 Skidmore was called for their third yellow card of the game.

Andre Bourjolly earned SIX saves in the contest to keep the game tied for the Lakers.

Gilroy finished the contest with six of the 15 total shots for the Lakers and three of five that were on goal.

The Lakers will come home to the shores of Lake Ontario next week, Tuesday, September 5th at 4pm to take on the Hamilton Continentals of the NESCAC conference.
