OSWEGO-NY – The SUNY Oswego women's hockey team hosted the #10 Utica Pioneers on Friday afternoon for a non-conference match-up at the Deborah F. Stanley arena. Utica edged out the Lakers by a score of 2-1.
In the first period, right off the opening faceoff, the Pioneers had a scoring opportunity turned away by Lakers goalie Hanna Skavnak. Utica took a one-goal lead at 7:38 of a faceoff in the SUNY Oswego zone. The Lakers saw their best scoring chances in the first come when Utica was called for cross-checking with four minutes left in the first. Without finding the back of the net, and outshooting the Pioneers, the Lakers entered the first break, down 1-0.
In the second period, SUNY Oswego was called for three penalties, however,
Sophia Kyrkostas got off three strong shots while the Lakers were short-handed during the first penalty. Later,
Simone Bednarik had a scoring opportunity of her own when the Lakers were short-handed, but both were swatted away by the Utica goaltender. After Utica took a 2-0 lead over SUNY Oswego, the Lakers scored their first goal of the game on a power play when
Rachel Corbett found
Mack Hull on a breakaway for the first Laker goal of the afternoon. Heading into the final break, the Lakers were down 2-1.
The third period was full of action with the Pioneers attempting to hold on to their lead and the Lakers making one final push to try and tie the game at two. In the thirteenth minute, each team was assessed a roughing penalty. The penalties opened the ice for the Lakers to have multiple good looks at the goal, but they were all turned away by Utica. As the third period wound down, SUNY Oswego pulled their goal, but it was not enough, and the Pioneers handed the Lakers their eighth loss of the season.
Up next, women's hockey will head to SUNY Cortland next Friday for a SUNYAC match-up at 7:00 PM.
