OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego State Women's Basketball returned home this evening looking to secure a revenge-win against the Oneonta Red Dragons. The score remained virtually tied for the majority of the contest, but a consistent defensive effort and late offensive surge from the Lakers allowed them to pull out a 55-48 win over the Dragons.
THE BASICS
Final Score: Oswego 55 (10-9, 6-4 SUNYAC), Oneonta 48 (6-10, 4-5 SUNYAC)
Location: Max Ziel Gymnasium | Oswego, N.Y.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite winning the opening tip-off, the Red Dragons gave the Lakers no breathing room in the first possession. Junior Guard, Macey DeOrdio opened scoring for Oswego with a 3-pointer at 5:40. The Lakers and Red Dragons played a relatively even first quarter, but Oneonta Guard Emma Schwarzbeck would give the Dragons a slim 11-8 advantage at the end of the first with a buzzer-beating three-point play.
The even play would persist throughout the second quarter, as both teams took turns shutting each other down on defense. Despite outshooting Oneonta, the Lakers would trail 23-20 heading into the second half.
The first few minutes of the 3rd quarter would remain scoreless until Oswego Junior Shania Iglesias broke through with a three-pointer at 8:09. The Red Dragons struggled to gain offensive momentum due to a lockdown defensive effort from the Lakers. The third quarter would close out with the scoreboard tied 34-34. Play would continue much the same, as both teams traded points throughout the final quarter. A late offensive surge from the Lakers awarded the team a 5-point lead with under a minute left in regulation. Sophomore Sydney Hoefs made both of her free-throw attempts to secure a final score of 55-48 in Oswego's favor.
It was a team effort for Oswego this evening as 9 different players scored for the Lakers. Shania Iglesias led the Lakers' efforts with 17 points and 4 rebounds. Sydney Hoefs also had a strong overall performance with 9 points, 2 rebounds, 4 steals, and an assist.
