HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lakers looked to rebound after a loss to Cortland the day before as they continued their conference play. The first set was a tone setter as the Mustangs came out strong to start and were able to grab a lead that they did not give up for the remainder of the first. Morrisville jumped out to a 7-3 lead that was only stifled by a kill by senior Cara Simplicio. This was not enough to spark the Lakers as the Mustangs continued to build on their lead where they took a 9 point lead 13-4. This would prove to be the difference as the Lakers were unable to close this gap. Oswego was able to build some positive momentum as they went on a seven point run led by Seniors Cara Simplicio and Madison Gordon to close the gap to 16-20. The early lead proved to be too much as the Mustangs closed the first set 25-18.
Oswego came out looking a lot more energized in the second set. Having proven to themselves that they could go on a run of their own, they came out looking strong and disciplined as they opened a 5-1 lead. The Mustangs responded in force as they were able to go off for seven unanswered points that took the lead right back for, 8-5 Morrisville. This run forced Oswego to call a timeout to regroup. The Second set would ensure and both teams would not go away as they traded points before each time found themselves knotted at 12 a piece. The Lakers led by Madison Gordon and Lillian Byrne were able to find timely points that kept the Lakers close. Morrisville was able to take a two point led 21-19 before the Lakers had a monster service ace by Priscilla McReynolds. With the Lakers hoping to steal the second set the Mustangs were able to find composure and close at the set stifling the Lakers run 25-21 Morrisville.
Morrisville proved to have the momentum because they came out clean in the third set forcing the Lakers into bad possessions and costly errors that gave the Mustangs a 4-0 lead. The Lakers did not want to go home early as they found their footing and they responded with a four point run of their own. The Lakers would find themselves down 7-4 before some highlight kills by Kailey Vugteveen and Lillian Byrne would equalize the score at sevens. Kailey Vugteveen proved to be the hot hand during the third set as she was able to add two more kills to the stat sheet as the Lakers would jump out to their first lead of the set 13-9. Morrisville would not back down as they would follow this lead by having three kills of their own by three different players. The Lakers were unable to keep the advantage as the Mustangs tied the set at 17 a piece. A kill by Priscilla McReynolds took the score to 18-17 before the Mustangs answered with two of their own. A kill and a forced error but Lakers forced a timeout by the Mustangs where in response they had two points of their own leaving the score at 21-23 Mustangs forcing another timeout this time by the Lakers.
