Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Oswego falls 1-0 to the Golden Eagles

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Field Hockey hosted former conference rival SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles this windy afternoon in a non-conference matchup. Both the Laker and Eagles came out of the gate flying, with Brockport pushing the pace early and Oswego responding respectively. As rain began to fall, aerials began to fly with both teams desperately trying to gain ground on one another. Despite some quality scoring chances at both ends of the field, the score would remain 0-0 heading into halftime. The second half of the game would be defined by back-to-back series of corner attempts and a goal by Brockport late in the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles would pull away from today's match with a 1-0 win over the Lakers.

THE BASICS

Final Score:

Oswego 0 (4-7, 0-1 SUNYAC),

Brockport 1 (9-3, 4-0 Empire 8)

Location: Laker Turf Stadium | Oswego, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both Brockport and Oswego came out of the gate flying. A stray Laker center pass would find its way onto the sticks of the Eagles. An extremely connected transition between the Brockport defensemen and midfielders would send forward Allison Greene on a breakaway. Greene would draw an early corner at the 1:45 mark, on which a strong shot by Emmalee Moore would hit the right goalpost. A second back-to-back corner would be awarded to the Golden Eagles, but a dangerous reverse chip would return possession to the Lakers. On the following play, Oswego would challenge Brockport on defense with a penalty corner of their own, on which they would unfortunately foul at the top of the circle.  As the first quarter got underway, it turned into an intense back-and-forth battle in the midfield. A fast Golden Eagle squad pushed the pace of play in the remaining minutes, but Oswego did not falter.

Although Brockport continued to control the pace of play in the opening minutes of the second quarter, the Lakers still managed to gain offensive possession. As rain started to fall, aerials started to fly, with both teams desperately trying to gain ground on each other. A few deceptive passing plays by the Eagles would test first year Laker Sam Krautheim in net, but the score would still remain 0-0, with just 5 minutes before halftime. A late offensive surge by Brockport, would generate a critical penalty corner opportunity with less than 2:20 remaining in the half. A wide shot by the Golden Eagles would be reclaimed and cleared out to by the Lakers just as the buzzer sounded.

The beginning sequence of 3rd quarter plays would remain fairly neutral in the midfield. A critical Laker corner opportunity, drawn by Junior Madi Stuckart at the 1:25 mark, would unfortunately be shutout by a connected Brockport defense. Oswego managed to hold the Golden Eagles in their defensive zone for much of the quarter but were unable to find the back of the net. In the final 3 minutes of the third quarter, Brockport drew five consecutive penalty corners, all 5 of which either stopped by Krautheim or blocked by Oswego's determined defensive unit. The 3rd quarter would close out with the score still in a 0-0 stalemate.

Despite the short intermission, it didn't take the Golden Eagles long to send forward Kalena Eaton down on a breakaway into Oswego's circle. Another huge save by Sam Krautheim would keep her shutout alive and return possession to the Lakers. A collision between teams would result in a tenth misfired corner attempt for Brockport at 11:08. A strong clear by Oswego would quickly be returned by a relentless Eagle offense. A crafty shooting play between Emmalee Moore and Terralyn McLaughlin would be tipped through the legs of Krautheim by Brockport Senior Gianna Salerno at the 10:51 mark of the 4th quarter. The Eagles would maintain offensive possession and continue to challenge the Lakers on defense for the remaining minutes of the quarter. The clock ticked down, and Brockport would conclude the match with a 1-0 win over Oswego. Huge shoutout to goalkeeper Sam Krautheim for an outstanding 13-save performance.
