Lakers Top Potsdam 6-1

Lakers Top Potsdam 6-1

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Men's Hockey continued their versus conference rival SUNY Potsdam. A goal scored by the Lakers in the early minutes of the first would give them the lead momentarily, before the Bears notched an equalizer goal on a breakaway. Undeterred, Oswego would extend their lead to 3-1 before the second. As 2nd period play got underway, the physicality picked up awarding the Lakers multiple power play opportunities, which they would find success on. Despite heading into the 3rd period with a comfortable 5-1 lead, Oswego continued to control play at both ends of the ice. A dangerously physical third period would test the Lakers' grit, but they would manage to close out the game with a 6-1 win over SUNY Potsdam earning another 2 SUNYAC points.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

Another strong opening faceoff won by first year Adam Grenier would give the Lakers immediate access to Potsdam's zone. Oswego wasted no time getting a handful of hefty pucks to the net, testing Bears goalie Lenny Perno early on. A solid line rush by Matthew McQuade and Colin Vassallo would catch the Potsdam defensemen on their heels. A scrum in front generated by a shot from Ryan Burke would be roofed into the net by Matt McQuade at 4:43. Oswego's 1-0 lead would be fleeting as a physical Potsdam team would find some momentum, finishing on a breakaway at 13:27 equalizing the score 1-1. Undeterred by the Bears' tally, the Lakers regained offensive possession and positioning on the following play. An exchange down the left wall between Travis Baker & Jesse Horacek would confuse the Bears defensemen giving Baker a lane to the net. The puck would be chipped in the air and batted behind Perno by Travis Baker 2 minutes later at 15:27. Keeping the pressure on, first year Nico Paone would add a third goal to the scoreboard less than a minute later extending the Lakers' lead to 3-1 heading into the second period.

A passive start to the 2nd period would give Potsdam a quick turn on offense as the Lakers found their bearings. A compilation of saves made by junior Brandon Milberg would return possession to Oswego, helping them regain offensive momentum. A penalty by the Bears would award the Lakers their first power play of the game, on which a powerful shot by Baker at the blueline would be tipped into the top left corner by senior Daniel Colabufo at 4:40, improving the scoreline to 4-1. As the physicality of play escalated, Potsdam would find themselves in the box again a couple minutes later at 9:01. Despite an unsuccessful power play attempt, The Lakers maintained possession and a snipe from Drake Semrad would pop the Keepers water bottle off the net and notch a fifth goal for the Lakers at the 11:15 mark of the second period. On the following play, Vassallo would be sent to the box for illegally hitting from behind, but a connected Laker penalty kill unit would shut down the Bears on their first power play attempt. As play returned the even-strength, Oswego remained in control maintaining their comfortable 5-1 lead.

A persistent effort by the Lakers would keep a tired Potsdam at bay in terms of scoring but not in terms of penalties. Oswego would soak a few and return a handful of majors hits, but the Bears would do their time for a few dangerous moments of contact. As the clock ticked down, the Lakers continued to pepper the net with shots, finding a sixth goal before the buzzer scored by Patrick Haughian. Oswego closes out the weekend with a 6-1 win over Potsdam earning two more SUNYAC points.
