Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Oswego Completes Weekend Sweep over William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y. – Oswego Women's hockey took a quick road trip to Geneva this evening where they faced off against the William Smith Herons for the second game of their two-game opening weekend series. After a hard-fought win last night, the Lakers came out ready to work in hopes of completing their first sweep of the season. A strong start for Oswego would give them a 1-0 lead early in the game. The Herons would turn up the intensity in a gritty 2nd period, but the Lakers would manage to hold onto their 1-0 lead heading into the third. William Smith would score an equalizer with just seconds left in regulation, forcing an overtime. A quick transition and shot by senior Mackenzie Hull would end the game and clutch a weekend sweep for the Lakers.

THE BASICS

William Smith 1 (0-2-0, 0-0 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lakers came out ready to work this evening, gaining offensive positioning off the opening faceoff. A few solid shots by Oswego would create multiple rebound opportunities in front, testing William Smith netminder, Erin Murray. As first period unfolded, the back-and-forth nature of last night's game began to creep into today's matchup, but the Lakers would be quick to break it out of their defensive zone and in transition. A cross-zone dump by First Year Solana Zizzo would be put to the front of William Smith's net by Graduate Student Rachel Corbett, generating a prime scoring chance. Junior transfer student Brittany Iversen would capitalize on this opportunity, notching the first goal 5:32 into the game. The Herons would turn on the burners in the remaining minutes, putting more pressure on Oswego at both ends of the ice.

Oswego would continue to find some early offensive chances in the beginning minutes of the second period, but William Smith would gain a powerplay advantage at the 16:29 mark keeping the Lakers in their zone briefly. A valiant effort by Oswego on the penalty kill would award them offensive momentum as they regained even-strength. A hooking penalty called against first year Heron Anna Tardiff would give the Lakers a turn on the powerplay in the following minutes, but the score would remain 1-0. As the clock began to tick down, William Smith began to control the pace of play, forcing Oswego to find another gear, as they held onto their 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd period.

A 50/50 battle of a third period would make it hard for either team to breakthrough, despite both teams having multiple powerplay opportunities. A perseverant effort by a physical William Smith squad would keep Oswego on their toes until the final buzzer. A handful of last-ditch offensive efforts made by the Lakers would be diminished by an equalizer goal scored by William Smith senior Kayla Ketchabaw, with just seconds remaining in regulation.

A passive overtime start by Oswego would quickly be turned around when senior Mackenzie Hull picked off a Heron pass in mid-ice. A quick transition and shot by Hull would end the game and clutch a 2-1 victory for the Lakers.
