Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Lakers Fall 2-1 In Second Game To Canton

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Women's Hockey returned to Deborah F. Stanley this evening looking to secure their second win of the weekend against the Canton Kangaroos in honor of their 3 seniors; Kensie Malone, Megan Buxton, Rachel "Ray Ray" Brase. The Lakers came out hot, scoring their first and only goal of the game just two minutes into play. As the game got underway, Oswego struggled to keep their momentum, falling out of rhythm on offense and giving up two goals on defense. This resulted in Canton pulling away from the contest with a 2-1 win over the Lakers.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego 1 (12-10-1, 10-5-1 SUNYAC), Canton 2 (13-11-0, 6-11-0 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lakers came out hot, gaining offensive entry from the opening face-off. Junior Simone Bednarik followed Rheya Zemlak's scoring initiative from yesterday's game, netting the Lakers' first and only goal of the afternoon just over two minutes into play. As the following minutes of the first period got underway, Oswego settled in on offense and shut Canton down on defense. The Lakers earned their first power play of the night at the 6:12 mark but were unable to capitalize. Oswego continued to take their shooting opportunities but would struggle to get their shots on net, leaving the scoreline remaining at 1-0 as the first frame came to a close.

After a dominant performance in the first period, the second would prove to be a challenge for the Lakers as the Kangaroos came out firing, catching Oswego on their heels. As the period unfolded, the score would remain in the Lakers' favor until Canton forward Anna Pavlasova found the back of the net for the Roos at the 9:06 mark. Oswego would earn a power play opportunity in the following minute but could not connect, making it easy for Canton's penalty kill to shut them out. The Lakers fought hard to regain possession, but a miscommunication at the offensive end of the ice would give Desiree Snook a short-handed breakaway, on which she tallied another goal for the Kangaroos at 10:26.

The Lakers would open the final frame of play down 2-1 but would not give up. In the first minute of 3rd period, Oswego would gain a power play advantage but were once again unsuccessful. The Lakers continued to chip away at a goal, battering Canton net minder Molly Lenihan with a range of shots. Although the Kangaroos did find the back of the net again, the puck refused to bounce in Oswego's favor. The Lakers pulled goaltender Lexi Levy in the final minutes of play in an attempt to tie the game up. Despite a few close scoring chances, Oswego could not breakthrough, closing out the third period with a 2-1 loss to Canton.

Oswego took a moment this afternoon to honor their three graduating seniors, Rachel Brase, Kensie Malone and Megan Buxton. Thank you and congratulations!
