CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oswego State Men's Hockey team traveled to Cortland this evening. With so much at stake within the SUNYAC conference, neither team could break a 1-1 stalemate in regulation, and it didn't take long for Cortland to put the game away with those extra five minutes.
THE BASICS
Final Score: Oswego 1 (16-8-1, 12-4-0 SUNYAC)
Cortland 1 (15-8-2, 10-5-1 SUNYAC)
Location: SUNY Cortland | Cortland, N.Y. | Alumni Ice Arena
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started out relatively even, with lots of end-to-end play and limited scoring opportunities. Both the Lakers and the Red Dragons recorded some chances including Tyler Flack's promising backhand shot that was saved with 10:49 left on the clock, but Cortland picked up the pressure, holding the puck in Oswego's end for a majority of the first period. Despite this pressure, Cortland was unable to capitalize thanks to the stellar play of Oswego goaltender Cal Schell. Overall, the Red Dragons finished the period on the upper hand, recording 17 shots versus Oswego's 7.
The action picked up as the Lakers came out of the locker room strong, peppering the Cortland defense with shot after shot, but were unable to find the back of the net. After a scuffle with 10:36 left, Cortland found themselves on the power play, and wasted no time scoring the first goal of the game with 9:58 remaining in the second period. The Lakers clapped back with 4:22 to go, as Connor Gatton and Ben Addison assisted Shane Bull tying it up at 1 goal a piece. The period ended 1-1 and the Lakers killed a power play going into the break.
The Lakers had a 2 minute power play early on in the third period, but were unable to capitalize. Cortland had a chance of their own with 11:36 to play, but were shut down by Cal Schell as he dove across the goal and blocked a rebound. The stalemate continued through the end of regulation, as neither team was able to net a second goal during the third period.
Cortland came out flying in overtime, almost putting the puck between the 5-hole only 15 seconds into the extra period. Then, with 3:04 to go, the Red Dragons buried the hatchet, putting a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net, and defeating the Oswego State Lakers in their final regular season game.
WHAT'S NEXT
The men's hockey team finishes their regular season with a record of 16-8-1 (12-4-0 SUNYAC) and will begin SUNYAC play next weekend (opponent TBD).
