GENESEO, N.Y. – No.2 Oswego Men's Hockey traveled to Geneseo for a head-to-head conference match-up with the No.1 Geneseo Knights. Both teams would prove their rankings in the opening minutes of play, but the game would quickly turn in the favor of the Knights as they netted 4 goals in the first period. Net-minder Brandon Milberg would replace starter Cal Schell for Oswego in the second period, but the Lakers were still unable to regain any momentum. Oswego unfortunately fell to Geneseo 7-1.
THE BASICS
Final Score: Oswego 1 (14-7-1, 10-3-0 SUNYAC), Geneseo 7 (18-4-0, 11-2-0)
Location: Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena | Geneseo , N.Y.
HOW IT HAPPENED
From the opening puck drop, both teams proved their rankings, trading offensive zone time and shots. The Knights began to gain momentum catching the Lakers on their heels in their defensive zone. The even play would persist until Geneseo forward Tyson Gilmour opened scoring for the Knights at the 9:04 mark. The score would remain 1-0 until the last five minutes of the 1st period when Geneseo ran away with the game, scoring 3 back-to-back goals extending their lead to 4-0 over the Lakers at the end of the first frame.
The second period kicked off, and the Knights continued their scoring reign, adding another tally to the scoreboard just 2:56 into the period and another at the 12:47 mark on a power-play. Sophomore goaltender Brandon Milberg would replace starter Cal Schell after the Knights' fifth unanswered goal. Despite multiple power-play opportunities, the Lakers were still unable to break through. The period would close out with the score standing at 6-0 in Geneseo's favor.
As the final frame of play initiated, Geneseo did not let up and Oswego began to tire. The Lakers struggled to execute on defensive breakouts and capitalize on scoring chances. A tripping penalty on Oswego forward Brett Fudger would award the Knights their fifth power-play and 7th goal of the night. Sophomore Connor Gatto found a way to sneak one by Geneseo goalie Adam Harris and put Oswego on the board at the 14:48 mark of the period. The Knights would close out the third period with a dominant 7-1 win over the Lakers, maintaining their first-place rank.
