OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's hockey team hosted the SUNY Potsdam Bears for the first game of Whiteout Weekend this evening. A slow first period was rectified by an exhilarating third period where six goals were scored, plus
Shane Bull and
Matt McQuade solidified their hat tricks. The game concluded with a 9-0 Laker win.
THE BASICS
Final Score: Oswego 9 (15-7-1, 11-3-0 SUNYAC) Potsdam 0 (6-15-1, 3-10-0 SUNYAC)
Location: Oswego State | Oswego, NY | Deborah F. Stanley Arena
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the first three minutes of play, Oswego took ownership of the game, rarely leaving the Bears zone, with five shots on goal. Midway through the period, a Laker shot was saved, and a loose puck was in the crease; the Lakers were not able to find it in time before the goalie covered it. With 1:30 left on the clock, Oswego missed a good opportunity to put themselves on the board.
Shane Bull passed to
Tyler Flack rushing in on the goal 2 on 1. Despite outshining Potsdam in shots 26-8, Oswego was unable to capitalize on their offensive upper hand.
With fast play beginning the second period, the first goal of the game came from
Trent Grimshaw (assisted by
Cam Symons and
Tristan Francis). Just about three minutes later, on a power-play, Flack fired a shot from a backdoor pass that found the back of the net with help from
Rocco Andreacchi and S. Bull. Sleeth found
Matt McQuade with a no-look pass in front of the net, who made no mistake, and scored the Lakers third goal of the period.
Brandon Milberg continued his strong showing in goal, blocking multiple shots in the remaining time at the end of the period, keeping the Bears off the board.
Starting off the final period with a bang, 44 seconds in, McQuade had a wrap-around goal with help from
Ben Addison. S. Bull scored a one-time shot from a cross crease pass by Flack, bumping up the score 5-0. The Lakers kept the crowd on their feet with all the nonstop action. On a breakaway pressuring the goalie one on one,
Thomas Rocco found the back of the net. After a mad scramble, the Lakers found the puck first leading
Shane Bull to capitalize on the confusion, improving the score again to 7-0. A nice pass from Flack gave S. Bull the opportunity to split the defense and allowed for a 1 on 1 chance with the goalie, which he buried, for the third goal of his hat trick. The Lakers kept up their fast-paced play, absolutely running away with the lead. Flack had the puck from behind the net and passed in front of the net to McQuade who had the initial shot blocked. He found the rebound and was able to secure goal number nine for the team which also completed his hat trick for the night.
