Lakers Host the Geneseo Knights in Second Conference Matchup

Oswego, N.Y. - The Oswego State Women's Lacrosse team hosted the Geneseo Knights on Wednesday afternoon for their second conference matchup in a row.

THE BASICS - Final Score: Oswego 7, Geneseo 11

Location: Laker Turf Stadium | Oswego State | Oswego, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED

A lightning-fast start for the Lakers as Sela Wiley secures the opening draw. Leading with charge, Wiley weaves through the Knight's defense with precision before firing the ball past the goalkeeper to open the scoring for Oswego. In a swift turnaround, the Knights shifted the momentum of the game in a quick free position shot after a check to the head, further followed by two additional goals, leaving the Lakers down, 1-3. The game unfolds as both teams engage in a relentless display of physicality and aggressive tactics. With three minutes left in the first quarter, Sophie Ruschin finds the back of the net, the second goal for Oswego. Once again, Geneseo reacts quickly, scoring two more goals to end the first quarter 2-5.

Keeping their momentum, the Knights win the draw and drive it to the goal, for their first goal of the second quarter. Although Geneseo currently holds the upper hand, Oswego remains focused on finding opportunities to chip away at the lead. In a display of sheer determination, the Lakers claw their way back into contention with consecutive goals by Madison Davis and Isabella Lembo. As the quarter draws to a close, the Knights extend their lead with two additional goals, leaving the Lakers with an uphill battle heading into halftime down 4-8.

Oswego's defense has been working strategically to keep Geneseo from having many scoring opportunities despite dominating possession. The intensity of play has led to an abundance of fouls and yellow cards for both teams, highlighting the competitiveness of the game. With four seconds left in the game, Isabella Lembo scores from a free shot position after being fouled by a Geneseo player to end the third quarter 5-9. The persistence of the Lakers' defense is showing through, as the Knights only scored one goal in this quarter compared to those of the first half.

The last quarter of the game starts with a turnover as Sophie Ruschin is run off the field, granting possession to the Knights, setting the stage for a crucial exchange in the closing moments of the game. Geneseo goes on to score two more goals in the fourth quarter but Oswego fights, shutting the Knights out for the rest of the quarter and scoring two goals of their own to end the game 7-11
