Baseball Takes 2 Out of 3 from Oneonta

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego Baseball team faced off against the Oneonta Red Dragons this afternoon for a doubleheader matchup. Oneonta took an early lead, but a breakout sixth inning looked optimistic after Oswego scored five to make the score 7-5. Two additional Red Dragon runs in the eighth solidified their game one win 9-6. In game two, Oneonta ignited a spark in the eighth with hopes of overtaking Oswego, but their efforts were not enough. The Lakers won game two 8-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1:
In the bottom of the first, an Oneonta batter reached first on a catcher's error after the strikeout. The next batter hit a homerun which gave them the edge up on Oswego early on.

After a Red Dragon batter got walked, the following batter hit a homerun making the score 4-0 with the Lakers trailing to end the third. .

In the top of the sixth, with Oswego runners on second and third, Owen Parliament singled to right field to bring in two runs putting the Lakers on the board 7-2. Jacob Levine doubled down the third baseline, and Parliament later scored on a passed ball. Blake VanDreason hit an inside the park homerun to lessen the score gap to 7-5. 

The Red Dragons scored an additional two runs in the eighth.

In Oswego's last chance at a comeback, Jelani Hamer doubled to right center, and Parliament singled to right center to bring in Hamer. This brought the score to 9-6, but Oneonta got the last two outs to end the game and take the win.

Game 2:

In the top of the third, Oswego had runners on second and third. A sacrifice bunt brought in the lead runner, and the runner on second advanced to third. A sacrifice fly then brought in run number two.

In the bottom of the fourth, with runners on second and third, an Oneonta batter reached first on an error which allowed the lead runner to score.

CJ McCarthy doubled to left center to start out the sixth. He advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt, and then scored after Hamer singled to center field. In the bottom, Oneonta had runners on the corners and the lead runner was brought in by a single up the middle to make the score 3-2 with Oswego leading.

In the top of the eighth, with runners on second and third, Hamer hit a homerun to left field to give the Lakers a big leg up over the Red Dragons 6-2. Later a single by McGowan brought in an additional run. With two outs and bases loaded, Anthony Barone got walked which brought in one run to make it 8-2. The first Oneonta batter hit a homerun to bring the Red Dragons tally to three. 

In the ninth, Oneonta brought in three runs to try to make some magic happen, but Oswego got the final out to take the win 8-6.

On the mount, Jonah Shearer pitched a great 6 complete innings striking out 8, he was relieved by Alek Conrad and Richie Paul.

WHAT'S NEXT 
The Lakers will host the Alfred State College Pioneers for a doubleheader on April 2. The games will start at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
