Lakers Edge Past Bears in Overtime Defensive Battle

OSWEGO, NY. - The Oswego State Men's Lacrosse team hosted the SUNY Potsdam Bears in a SUNYAC conference matchup this afternoon. In a defensive masterclass of a game, the Lakers defeated the Bears by a score of 5-4, with an overtime game winner.

Final Score: Oswego State 5 (5-3,2-0 SUNYAC), SUNY Potsdam 4 (6-3,1-1 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After winning the opening face-off, the Lakers and Bears went back and forth for a while, but it wasn't until the 12 minute mark that Emmett Starowizc opened up the scoring from up top, with a high-to-low overhand shot. The Potsdam Bears would respond just seconds later with an equalizer, and that would do it, as the first quarter ended 1-1.

Oswego would win the opening face-off again in the second quarter, but the defensive dominance would continue for the Lakers, thanks to some heroics between the sticks from Seamus Hand. Connor Aspinall would score the first goal of the quarter, with a high-to-low shot from 15 yards out, and Corey O'Connor would score a behind the back goal with 4 minutes to play, improving the Lakers' lead to 3-1 going into halftime.

Potsdam would win the first face-off of the third, but after 10 minutes of play, neither team had scored another goal. The Bears eventually put one more past Seamus Hand, off of a rebound shot, but the Lakers entered the 4th quarter ahead by a score of 3-2.

After winning the face-off to open up the fourth quarter, the Bears wasted no time, tying up the game at 3 goals a piece in under a minute. Then, with 4 minutes to go, Corey O'Connor scored a low-to-high sidearm shot, to give the Lakers a 4-3 lead. The Bears would tie things up once again though, with a sidearm into the top corner which would take the game into overtime.

The Bears would win the overtime face-off, but Seamus Hand would once again come up big for the Lakers. Then, with 7 seconds to play, Hayden Coney scored the game winner with a sidearm shot from the left side of the field, to make it Oswego 5, Potsdam 4.

The Men's Lacrosse team will host SUNY New Paltz next Saturday, April 6th, at 1:00PM, in a SUNYAC conference matchup.
