Women's Lacrosse Takes Down Undefeated SUNY New Paltz

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The SUNY Oswego women's lacrosse team hit the road this weekend to take on the undefeated number one team in the SUNYAC, The SUNY New Paltz Hawks. In a thrilling finish, Sela Wiley boosted the Lakers past the undefeated Hawks with a late goal, 14-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophie Ruschin controlled the opening draw that led to a free position goal for Julia Quirk to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead less than one minute into the action. New Paltz didn't wait long to tie the game up at one scoring about a minute later. Sela Wiley then scored two goals for the Lakers, one coming with 12 minutes remaining and one coming with 5 minutes remaining (both unassisted). In the final minute of the first, Isabella Lembo got on the board thanks to an assist from Madison Davis and Oswego took a 4-1 lead into the second.

In the second, less than two minutes in, Alexis Hill buried a goal building on the Laker lead. The Hawks then scored three goals in a row to cut the lead down to 5-4 in favor of Oswego. Julia Quirk fired one past the goalie on a free position attempt, but New Paltz answered right back with two minutes remaining in the half.

Isabella Lembo scored the first goal of the second half less than five minutes in. After a quick answer from New Paltz, Oswego scored again off the stick of Isabella Lembo from Julia Quirk. Julia Quirk then buried another goal to take a 9-6 lead with 8 minutes remaining in the third. Before the end of the third quarter, New Paltz grabbed a two-goal lead scoring 5 unanswered goals, 11-10.

New Paltz scored first in the fourth which was quickly followed by another Lembo goal assisted by Madison Davis keeping the lead to just one. After a Hawks goal, Cassidy Croce fought back with a goal of her own for the Lakers with less than five minutes to play. Seal Wiley tied the game up at 13 for the Lakers with just a minute left to play. Then with just 18 seconds left, it was Wiley again giving the Lakers a late-game lead over the Hawks, 14-13! The defense held strong in the final second of play for the Lakers and they took down the number one team in the SUNYAC, New Paltz!

Women's lacrosse will host Buffalo State on Tuesday at 4:00 PM for another SUNYAC match-up.
