OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Women's Lacrosse returned home this afternoon to host a conference matchup against the Buffalo State Bengals. The Lakers, looking to retain the winning momentum they have found in their previous two games, came out hot mounting a lead early. A connected effort on defense and an outstanding scoring performance from 6 different Lakers this afternoon contributed to a dominant 19-6 win over the Bengals improving Oswego's conference record to 5-2, and overall record to 9-5.
THE BASICS
Final Score: Oswego 19 (9-5, 5-2 SUNYAC), Buffalo State 6 (6-5, 2-4 SUNYAC)
Location: Laker Turf Stadium | Oswego, N.Y.
HOW IT HAPPENED
An opening draw control by the Bengals would send them down the field for the first turn on offense. A goal by Buffalo midfielder Brooklyn Hill at 14:20 would open the scoring for the match. A successful following draw controlled by sophomore Alexis Hill would be picked up and carried in by Laker midfielder Sela Wiley. Just moments later, sophomore attacker Noelle Smith tied the game up at 1-1, with a nifty high-to-low goal at 14:11. A connected effort between Oswego's offense would help keep possession and set Madison Davis up for a nice one-timer goal just off the crease at the 10:01 mark. Davis would notch her second of the day just seconds later off a free position shot at 9:55, making the score 3-1. A physical battle for a ground ball would award Sela Wiley a free position shot and goal at 8:19. Vanessa Willick from the Bengals would return a goal to make the score 4-2. One-timer goals would be the key in today's match up, as Julia Quirk secured her first of the day at 5:41 off a pass from Wiley. The final minutes of the quarter would go scoreless until Madison Davis completed a hat trick and the quarter on a fade away shot with just 6 seconds left.
The Lakers would start the second just as they ended the first, on offense. A connected passing performance would allow Oswego to slow the game down and maintain possession. A goal by freshman Cassidy Croce would open scoring in the 2nd quarter at 10:47. Sela Wiley would follow Croce's initiative and notch another goal 8 seconds later at the 10:39 mark. Despite the 6-goal differential Wiley did not let up, matching Davis's hat trick at 9:09. A following draw control by Hill would send the Lakers on offense once again. Smith would lose her defender on the doorstep and continue Oswego's scoring parade with a 10th goal for the Lakers at 8:39. A fifth unanswered goal of the quarter by Isabella Lembo would cause Bengals head coach Ashley Holdridge to pull starting Buffalo net minder Brielle Lum at 7:55. Moira Penot would replace Lum and get a warm welcome from Oswego with a free position goal from Cassidy Croce just 10 seconds after entering the game. A growing 10-goal differential and a running clock would put pressure on the Bengals to respond, and they did just that with a 3rd goal at 5:45. A green card on Buffalo attacker Malenne Vinueza would give Oswego a man-up opportunity on which they would capitalize, improving the scoreline to 13-3. The remaining minutes of the half would remain scoreless, once again, until Madison Davis closed out the second quarter with her 4th goal of the day.
A consistent effort at both ends of the field would keep the Bengals at bay as the clock continued to run throughout the third quarter. Buffalo State were able to get some shots on net, but none would sneak past junior goaltender Sarah Kamide. The 14-3 scoreline would remain unphased for the beginning 5 minutes of the third until Lembo notched a 15th goal for Oswego. The rest of the period would go scoreless until Sela Wiley secured yet another goal, off a free position shot, for the Lakers at the 2:29 mark, pushing a score of 16-3 to end the 3rd quarter.
Isabella Lembo would start the final quarter strong, fixing her 50th goal of the season at 13:08. A few minutes would pass before Buffalo were able to gain some momentum on offense, notching a fourth goal at 9:51 on a free position shot. The clock continued to tick down, but the Bengals would not back down, scoring another goal at 5:57, lessening their deficit to 17-5. Julia Quirk and Sela Wiley did not waste much time before putting Oswego back on offense and recording 2 more goals, making the score 19-5. A sixth goal for Buff State with 2:06 remaining would unfortunately not be enough to rectify the Lakers' 13-goal lead. Oswego would pull away from the matchup with a dominant 19-6 victory and a third consecutive conference win.
