Lakers Baseball Takes Two From St John Fisher, Hamer Homers Twice

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The SUNY Oswego Baseball team hosted the St. John Fisher University Cardinals for a doubleheader matchup this afternoon. Oswego benefitted from an early lead in game one to take the win. In game two, Oswego solidified their win by scoring five runs in the fifth and limiting the Cardinals to a single run in the final inning.

Game 2: Oswego 11 (11-8, 2-1 SUNYAC), SJFU 1 (10-14, 7-1 Empire 8)

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Game 1:

Jonah Shearer started on the mound for Oswego and got the win in game 1.

With Cardinal runners on first and second, a single brought in the lead runner and pushed the other to third. A groundout brought in run number two. Trey McGowan hit a double to get the Lakers started. He advanced from a single by CJ McCarthy and scored on a wild throw. Jelani Hamer singled to center field to bring in McCarthy. Owen Parliament and Tishawn Featherstone both hit singles to get on base. Next up, Jacob Levine singled and reached second from an infield error while Parliament scored. At the end of the first the score was 4-2, Oswego.

In the second inning, Joe McLaughlin singled to left field, stole second and later advanced to third from a groundout. McCarthy was hit by a pitch and Hamer then hit a homerun to left field to bring the score up to 7-2. 

In the bottom of the third, Levine and Anthony Barone both hit singles and McLaughlin got hit by a pitch to load up the bases. McGowan then walked to bring in a run for Oswego. McCarthy also got hit by a pitch to bring in run number nine.  

With two outs and Cardinal runners on first and second, the next batter hit up the middle hitting pitcher Alek Conrad. Despite getting hit, he was still able to grab the ball and get the out at first. No runs were scored in the fourth. 

In the fifth, SJFU had runners on first and second. The lead runner scored on a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the inning, McGowan got hit by a pitch, stole second and third and got brought in from a single to right field by Hamer. Hamer stole second and made it home after Parliament singled to center field. Featherstone then got hit by a pitch and Daniel Winchester singled, allowing Parliament to score. Levine then doubled to left field to bring in another run. Now with two outs, Winchester scored following a groundout which scored run number 14 for the Lakers. Oswego brought in an additional run which brought the score to 15-3. 

In the top of the seventh, SJFU hit a solo home run to left field. Oswego then added an additional two runs to their leading tally. 

In the top of the eighth, the Cardinals brought in a run with only one out. With two runners on base, SJFU hit a homerun to make the score 17-8. In the bottom, Stephen Haglund hit a solo homerun for the Lakers. The next three batters walked and Brian Brezosky hit a double to left field which brought in two runs. 

In the final inning, SJFU had the bases loaded. A single brought in two runs and the next batter reached first on an error to bring in another run. The Cardinals scored three more runs before the conclusion of the game. The game ended with Oswego on top, 20-14. 

Game 2: 

In the bottom of the first, McGowan walked and then stole second. Parliament walked and both runners were then brought in by Featherstone who hit a double to the fence.

In the bottom of the fourth, McGowan walked and McLaughlin singled to third. Hamer hit a homerun, his second of the day,to bring Oswego's score up 5-0. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Oswego had runners on second and third. McGowan reached on a fielder's choice which brought in a run. McLaughlin then hit a single to center field which brought in run number seven; he later stole second. Hamer singled to center field which allowed McLaughlin to score. Parliament then reached first on an infield error to move Brezosky (pinch runner for Hamer) to third. Both runners then advanced on a passed ball with Brezosky scoring. Oswego added one more run to bring their tally up to 10.  

In the bottom of the sixth, Felix De Asa Delacruz hit a solo homerun which made the score 11-0. 

At the top of the seventh, the Cardinals had runners on first and second. A single by SJFU was enough for the lead runner to score their only run of the game. The game concluded 11-1. 

WHAT'S NEXT 
The Lakers will travel to Brockport this weekend for a single game on Friday at 3 p.m and a doubleheader on Saturday with start times of 12 and 3:30 p.m.
