Game Recap: Field Hockey |

The Lakers Fall 4-1 to the Saints

CANTON, N.Y. – Oswego Field Hockey traveled to St. Lawerence University this afternoon to face off against the Saints in a non-conference match-up. Regardless of the hour and a half rain-delay, both teams came out ready to roll. An early goal by graduate student Bryleigh Beauchat would put the Lakers on the board first, but the Saints did not waiver, tying the game up and mounting a 2-1 lead in the second quarter. After a back-and-forth third quarter, the Lakers came back to life in the 4th, having multiple quality scoring chances. Despite this late offensive surge, the Saints did not let up, scoring two more goals in the final 5 minutes of play to secure a 4-1 win over Oswego.

THE BASICS

Final Score:
Oswego 1 (1-2, 0-0 SUNYAC),
St. Lawerence 4 (1-2, 0-0 Liberty League)

Location: Hall-Leet Stadium | Canton, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After an hour and a half rain-delay, the first quarter kicked off with a quick offensive transition by the St. Lawerence.  An early foul against Oswego would give the Saints their first corner attempt of the game, but they would be unsuccessful. St. Lawerence did not give the Lakers much time to settle in on defense before reattacking Oswego's net. Some quick shots by the Saints would test Freshman goaltender Sam Krautheim but play remained scoreless. A strong clear by the Oswego defense would send the midfielders quickly up the field and into St. Lawerence's striking circle. A solid shot by senior Kaitlyn Jordan would find its way behind opposing goalie Elizabeth Walsh, which graduate student Bryleigh Beauchat was able to put in the back of the net at 5:23. The rest of first quarter play remained neutral, with both teams sharing offensive and defensive opportunities.

The second quarter started off much like the first with the Saints on offense. Despite multiple quality corner plays, St. Lawerence was unable to breakthrough until Caroline Hamilton put one over the pad of Krautheim from deep in the circle at 23:55 to tie the score up 1-1. In the following minutes the Saints would remain on offense and would force multiple fouls against the Lakers. A quality drive from the top of the sixteen by Saints midfielder Maddy Shaw would be saved and kicked right back to her stick. Shaw would be secure a second goal for St. Lawerence off her second shot at 28:59.

The 3rd quarter was a back-and-forth battle, but St. Lawerence would remain in control of the game at both ends of the field. Oswego would have some quality chances off corner plays, but none would elude Walsh, and the 2-1 scoreline would persist.

The fourth quarter did not differ much from the third, besides Oswego finding more of a rhythm on offense. A series of fouls against the Saints would offer the Lakers multiple shooting opportunities and odd man rushes, which would be shut down by a connected St. Lawerence defensive unit. St. Lawerence forward Maggie Spire would be awarded a free hit in the midfield which she would direct to teammate Charlotte Lehr just outside Oswego's 25-yard line. Lehr ran the ball into the circle where she would notch a goal off a tomahawk shot at 55:12, extending St. Lawerence's lead to 3-1. The Saints did not let up scoring their fourth and final goal of the match less than 3 minutes later at 57:32.
