HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Hartwick came out with urgency and built a quick 7-0 lead over the Lakers in the first set. Kills from
Priscilla McReynolds (assist
CJ Eidem) and
Kalley Vugteveen (assist
Mya Bush) boosted the Lakers closer, but Oswego still trailed Hartwick mid-way through the first set, 17-8. From that point, the Lakers only mustered three more points and fell in set one, 25-11.
The second set started in identical fashion with Hartwick up 7-0 to start. After a few errors from the Hawks,
Harper Phinney delivered a service ace to make the score 9-5 with Oswego trailing.
Emily Zeisler sent home a few kills assisted by
CJ Eidem, but it was not enough, and Oswego fell in set number two, 25-11.
In set three, thanks to a few errors and a kill from
Gigi Basile (assist
Harper Phinney), Oswego found themselves with a 5-3 lead early on. The set remained close at 8 points a piece after
Cara Simplicio delivered a kill from
Harper Phinney. Hartwick began to pull away building a lead as high as 6, until kills from McReynolds and Basile knotted the set at 16 each. From there, Hartwick went on a run that the Lakers were not able to recover from and Oswego fell in three straight sets.
Game 2
Heading into their second match of the day, the Lakers opened a 3-0 lead over Clarkson. After exchanging points, the two teams were tied up at 8 apiece. Clarkson then scored three points in a row and would not let Oswego back into the set no matter how much they pushed back. After taking advantage of some Clarkson errors,
Emily Zeisler (
Mya Bush assist) and
Priscilla McReynolds (
Cara Simplicio assist) delivered kills along with an ace from Simplicio. This burst was not enough however, and Oswego fell in set 1, 25-21.
In the second set, the Lakers grabbed an early lead and never looked back. McReynolds and Zeisler were a force on offense keeping Clarkson at bay each time they tried to make a run. Serves from
Mya Bush and
Cara Simplicio ultimately put away Clarkson, 25-22 in the second set.
The third set was close to the opposite of the second. The Lakers found themselves down late, 24-17. Then,
Grace Gdovin slammed home a kill from
Harper Phinney. That was followed by a kill from
Lilian Byrne, also from
Harper Phinney. Gdovin sent a service ace next, and Clarkson committed two errors which put the Lakers just two points behind their host. Unfortunately, Clarkson found a way to close out the Lakers, 25-22.
In the fourth set, the Lakers 7
th set of the day, fatigue began to set in. Clarkson opened with a 6-0 lead that ballooned as high as 14-2. Simplicio, Basile, McReynolds, and Gdovin all delivered kills, but Clarkson closed out Oswego, 25-12.
