HOW IT HAPPENED
In a physical showdown with the Golden Wolves, the Lakers scored first at the 9:22 mark. Freshman
Brandon Cohen found the back of the net assisted by
Nico Paone on a power play. A few minutes later the Golden Wolves were awarded a penalty shot that ricocheted off the pipe to keep the Lakers lead at 1. The second goal of the game was scored by team Captain
Matt McQuade who was assisted by both of his assistant captains,
Connor Gatto and
Travis Baker to bump the lead up to 2 (Power Play). After each team exchanged penalties, the Lakers added a third goal from
Brandon Cohen once again and he was assisted by
Matt McQuade.
The Lakers started the second period right where they left off. Graduate
Mike Kocsis buried a shot with the assist from Mike Urgo giving the Lakers a 4-0 lead and forcing a goalie change for Alvernia. The change proved to be effective and held the Lakers to a 4-goal lead until the end of the second period.
For most of the third period the two teams exchanged goal scoring opportunities with
Brandon Milberg coming up big for the Lakers in net. At the 11:04 mark,
Cam Symons scored his first goal of the weekend on a breakaway to boost the lead to 5 goals for the Lakers over the Golden Wolves. The Lakers would maintain the lead and secure a tournament championship in the 2025 Holiday Classic. The Lakers earned 5 spots on the all-tournament team along with
Brandon Milberg as the tournament MVP after he did not allow a goal all weekend.
