Lakers Earn First Win of the Season over St John Fisher

Clinton, N.Y - The Oswego State women's basketball team traveled to Clinton, NY to take on the St John Fisher Cardinals in their first of two contests in the Hamilton Tip-Off Classic. The Lakers secured their first victory of the season after a dominant first half and strong late-game defense performance carried them to a hard-fought win.

How it Happened

Several Lakers had strong offensive performances, with 5 players scoring in double digits

Senior guard Sydney Hoefs led the Lakers with 15 points, knocking down a pair of threes in the effort. Junior Guard Bri Weaver and Senior Forward Giavanna White-Principio each added 14 points, with White-Principio recording her 2nd double-double in 2 games to start the year after bringing in 14 points and 13 rebounds in today's win.

Oswego came out firing, starting the game on a 21-6 run in the first eight minutes of action. The Lakers buried four three-pointers in the first quarter and carried that momentum into the second, closing the half shooting 6-for-13 from beyond the arc (46%) and taking a 38–24 lead into the break. 

Early into the second half, the Lakers continued their offensive success getting the lead to 46-26 before the Cardinals would go on a 9-0 run to cut Oswego's lead to 11. The Cardinals caught fire from deep, opening the quarter 6-for-6 from three and trimming the Lakers' lead to just four. In the fourth quarter, the Lakers tightened up defensively and knocked down key shots to hold on to the lead against the Cardinals. Strong rebounding and late free throws helped Oswego close out the 78–70 victory.

The Lakers are back tomorrow at 3 pm to face the Hamilton Continentals in their 2nd game in the Hamilton Tip-Off Classic.
