Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Lakers Sweep First SUNYAC Weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Oswego Women's Hockey had a quick turnaround, facing off against the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs this afternoon for their second SUNYAC matchup of the weekend. Determined to secure two more conference points, the Lakers were not going to let anything get in their way. A hot start by Oswego would get them on the board just minutes into play, but the Mustangs managed to respond with an equalizer. Despite their valiant effort, Morrisville would find themselves at a 3-1 deficit entering the second period. An even 2nd frame would have both teams trading turns on offense, but the scoreline would remain 3-1. Eager to extend their lead, the Lakers wasted no time adding three more goals to the scoresheet, securing a 6-1 win and two more SUNYAC points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Looking to build off yesterday's momentum, the Lakers came out firing against the Mustangs. Earning offensive positioning off the starting faceoff, Oswego was quick to find the back of the net with a rebound goal scored by first-year Natalie Loncz just 3:07 into play. Finding their legs quickly, Morrisville responded with an equalizer a few minutes later at 6:36. A scoring drought would persist for much of the opening period but would eventually be broken by junior Jenna Majewski at the 16:20 mark. Now leading 2-1, the Lakers did not let up in the final minutes, adding a third goal to the tally just before the initial buzzer.

The intermission gave the Mustangs some time to catch their breath and regroup, coming out much more organized and connected in the early minutes of the second period. Despite this new identity, it did not take long for the Lakers to regain possession and tire them out in their defensive zone. A holding penalty charged to Madison Lawerence, awarded Oswego a prime powerplay opportunity, but they were unable to capitalize. On the following play, Morrisville found themselves on an advantage of their own. But a flawless Laker penalty kill shut down the Mustangs on every front. Leaving the scoreline stagnant 3-1 heading into the final frame.

Eager to regain some momentum and add to their scoring reign, Oswego kept their foot on the gas. A breakout pass from a Laker defenseman would be bobbled in the neutral puck in the neutral zone but would picked up and taken in by Tilly Pethrick who released a heavy wrist shot on net. Tipped by a Morrisville defender, Pethrick's puck managed to evade the sights of netminder Gabrielle Brazeau just 1:34 into the period. Majewski followed her teammate's scoring initiative with an impressive toe-drag snipe at the 7:57 mark. As time ticked down, the physicality continued to increase, but first year Georgia Cunliffe would have the last laugh, notching a sixth and final goal for the Lakers.
