Lakers Defeat the Bengals 2-1 in Overtime

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The SUNY Oswego women's hockey team took the ice again this afternoon for their second game in a row at home against the Buffalo State Bengals. Yesterday the Lakers cruised to a 7-0 victory but today proved to be a different story.

THE BASICS

Final Score:
Oswego 2 (16-2-1, 12-1-1 SUNYAC)
Buffalo State 1 (5-15-1, 1-12-1 SUNYAC)
Location: Deborah F. Stanley Ice Arena | Oswego, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED
At the start of this second game of the weekend, the Lakers took a while to get their offense going. They finally broke through at the 7-minute mark of the first, Lauren Schell fired a shot near the blue line while the Lakers were on a power play and gave Oswego their only lead of the afternoon, 1-0. The lead held until the end of the first period.

In the second period, each team exchanged penalties, but neither were able to capitalize. They peppered the Bengals goalie with 4 shots, but none were able to sneak through. Five more shots came off the sticks of Oswego in the second, but Buffalo State kept them at bay. Buffalo State tested Lakers goaltender Lexi Levy with 10 shots of their own, but Oswego ended the second period with their 1-0 lead.

The third period got underway, and it appeared fatigue was starting to set in for the Lakers. Just when it looked like Oswego would head home with a 1-0 win, Vanessa Willick blew past the Oswego defense and buried one over the shoulder of Levy to tie this game at 1 in the final minute of play. The Bengals and Lakers were heading for overtime.

In the final minute of overtime, Mack Hull and Simone Bednarik found themselves on a breakaway, Hull passed to Bednarik whose shot was saved but Lauren Schell was there to collect the rebound and score her second goal of the game, this time for the win.
