Lakers Secure 5-0 Shutout Against Roo's

CANTON, N.Y. – Oswego Women's Hockey hit the road this afternoon heading to Canton, N.Y. to faceoff against the SUNY Canton Kangaroos in a two-game conference series. Looking to close out remainder of their SUNYAC campaign undefeated, the Lakers came out focused on a win. A flat first period by Oswego, in terms of energy, would award Canton some solid chances but the game would remain scoreless heading into the 2nd period. Unsatisfied with their average start, the Lakers would add 3 goals to the scoreboard in the first 8 minutes of the second, gaining a comfortable lead over the Roos entering the final frame. Both teams would take turns on the power play, but Oswego continued to get it done in even-strength play, running away with a 5-0 shutout victory over the SUNY Canton Kangaroos.

THE BASICS

Final Score:

Oswego 5 (17-2-1, 13-1-1 SUNYAC)

Canton 0 (6-11-2, 4-8-1 SUNYAC)

Location: Terry L. Martin Ice Arena | Canton, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED

An opening faceoff win by Canton would give them some offensive jump straight off the circle, putting pucks on net almost immediately. As the Lakers began to settle into the game, they found some rhythm on defense, connecting on breakouts and finding each other in neutral zone transition. Both teams would have equal quality scoring chances but both Lexi Levy and Molly Lenihan stood tall in net, swallowing all shots at both ends of the ice. Oswego began to tilt the momentum in their favor towards the end of the period, but a determined Canton defense would keep them at bay, sending the game into the 2nd period tied 0-0.

Unsatisfied with their scoreless effort in the first period, the Lakers wasted no time, feeding team captain Sophia Kyrkostas a nifty slip pass, off which she would open scoring just 0:53 seconds into the second period. Kyrkostas' snipe would light a fire under the Laker bench, giving them a boost of energy in the following minutes. Some solid possession and offensive zone time by Oswego would award senior Mackenzie Hull with the 2nd goal of the game at the 6:21 mark. Following her elders' scoring initiatives, first year Meagan Smith extended the scoreline to 3-0 just less than a minute later at 7:02. Despite their growing 3-0 lead, the Lakers kept their foot on the gas heading into the final frame.

Oswego came out firing in the beginning minutes of the 3rd period, catching the Kangaroos on their heels off the final opening faceoff. A few passing plays and shots generated by the Lakers would continue to test Molly Lenihan in net, but nothing would find the back of the net would remain 3-0 until sophomore transfer Jenna Majewski tallied a 4th goal at 5:02. As time ticked down, the Lakers maintained their intensity finding the back of the net once more with just less than 5 minutes to play. Canton began to tire in the final minutes, giving Oswego a last-ditch chance on the powerplay, but the Lakers would have to settle for a 5-0 victory over SUNY Canton. Another stellar 23-save performance by veteran netminder Lexi Levy would help her team secure their eighth shutout win of the season.
