Lakers Fall to Cortland Red Dragons in First SUNYAC Game of the Season

CORTLAND, NY. - The SUNY Oswego Baseball traveled to Cortland this afternoon and came up short against the Red Dragons by a score of 8-2.

THE BASICS
Final Score:
Oswego 8 (7-4, 0-1 SUNYAC)
Cortland 2 (8-7, 1-0 SUNYAC)
Location: Robert H Wallace Field | Cortland, NY

HOW IT HAPPENED
Joel Hayner got the start on the mound for the Lakers, as neither team was able to produce much in the first inning.

In the second, the Lakers started out hot with two outs, Emil Sander homered to left field, driving home Anthony Barone, and giving the Lakers a 2 run lead going into the bottom of the inning. This lead wouldn't last long though, as Cortland would score 6 runs on 6 hits in the bottom of the second, leaving the Lakers behind 2-6.

Neither team would score another run in the next five innings, as the Lakers went into the eighth still behind 2-6.

In the eighth, the Lakers loaded the bases, with hits from Tishawn Featherstone, Trey McGowan, and Anthony Barone, but Emil Sander was unable to connect, flying out to right field, and ending the inning with nothing to show for their hard work.

Cortland tacked on two more in the bottom of the eighth, as the Lakers relieved Joel Hayner who finished the day with 113 pitches, and 10 hits allowed. Nick Cody would replace Hayner to close out the game for Oswego, allowing one of the two runs previously mentioned.

In the ninth, the Lakers got 2 more runners on base, but it wasn't enough, as they were unable to drive in any runs, and took the loss by a score of 8-2.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Lakers will return to Cortland and face off against the Red Dragons again in a double header tomorrow, starting at noon.
