HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
The Lakers were stymied early by Plattsburgh's starter Gemmett, who struck out seven and held Oswego to just five hits over seven innings. Oswego's offense struggled to capitalize on its opportunities, leaving eight runners stranded and not breaking through until the final frame.
Plattsburgh struck early with a three-run first inning, capitalizing on a leadoff double and a costly throwing error by Oswego pitcher
Chelsea Sellars. Though Sellars settled in after the rough start, the early deficit proved too much to overcome. She tossed a complete game, allowing nine hits and four runs (three earned) while walking three and striking out two.
Offensively, Oswego saw scattered production at the plate.
Kira Wright had a strong start with a leadoff single and two stolen bases, finishing 1-for-3 with a walk.
Kylie Detz added a double, and
Tahlia Gerardi and Ari Guinassi each chipped in with hits. Oswego's lone run came in the top of the seventh when
Leah Abbruzzese scored on a fielder's choice grounder from
Mackenzie Carlson.
The Lakers threatened with the bases loaded and no outs in that final inning, but Gemmett held strong to limit the damage and secure the win for Plattsburgh.
Game 2
After a slow start, the Lakers exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh to blow open a tight 3–1 game. Oswego's offense came alive with 14 hits, led by
Mackenzie Carlson, who had a monster game with three hits, two runs scored, and a pair of triples.
Kylie Detz was right there with her, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Oswego scratched across runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings to carry a narrow 3–1 lead into the final frame. Then came the fireworks. A two-RBI double by
Gianna DeGonza, a clutch two-RBI single from
Carolyn Sculco, and a two-RBI triple by
Kira Wright powered the seventh-inning rally. Every run was earned and every hit hard-earned, showing a level of poise and execution the Lakers have been working toward all season.
In the circle,
Maria Lutz was outstanding. She went the distance, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out two over seven innings to earn her sixth win of the season. She worked efficiently, needing just 96 pitches and keeping Plattsburgh off balance all game.
Defensively, the Lakers were flawless, committing no errors and turning two double plays — one of which killed a potential Plattsburgh rally in the fifth inning. The team's defensive sharpness, combined with smart base running and a few timely bunts, rounded out a complete team effort.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lakers will finish their road trip with a pair of games tomorrow at Potsdam starting at 3:00 PM.
