HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
The Lakers took to the road for a Friday afternoon battle versus SUNYAC foe Potsdam. The Lakers looked to build off a strong showing the day before in Plattsburgh. The Lakers would hand the ball to Grad Chelsea Sellars for game 1 as they tried to get off to a strong start. The Bears would have Senior Lexie Cottrill on the mound.
The Lakers offense would sputter out of the gates as they failed to get a base runner until the third inning. The Bears meanwhile would find holes and opportunities to score as they opened the game with 3 runs in the bottom of the first. The Bears would add two more runs off a pair of hits in the bottom of the third that would see the lead extend to 5-0 Bears.
A pair of doubles from the Bears in the bottom of the fourth would solidify and extend Potsdam's lead to 8-0 before the Lakers would turn the ball over to Freshman Aubrey Cantrell. The Lakers would find their first piece of offense in the top of the fifth inning as a single by Mackenzie Carlson, and a forced error by Ellie Mahoney would see the Lakers with their first runners in scoring position. A rip Single by Ariana Guinassi down the right field line would push the first Lakers run across and see the scoreline change to 8-1 Bears.
With the Lead solidified at 7, the Bears tried to end the game a few innings early but Freshman Aubrey Cantrill would not allow any more of the Bears offense to spark. The Lakers and the Bears would go scoreless down the stretch after the fifth inning and it would set the stage for game 2.
The Lakers lose game 1, 1-8
Game 2
The shift in momentum would carry over to the second game of the afternoon. The Lakers would not wait as long as they did in game 1 to put runners aboard and threaten to score. In the top of the first the Lakers would put runners on the corners with two outs before the Bears got a much needed fly out to end the scoring chance. As the Lakers looked to bounce back they turned to senior Maria Lutz on the bump.
In the bottom of the first the bears would score the games first run off a well-executed sacrifice bunt that would put the Bears up 1-0. Senior Maria Lutz would not be deterred as she settled back in and got a huge strikeout to end the inning and the damage.
In the top of the second inning the Lakers would answer with some offense of their own. A double from Tahlia Gerardi and a single from Lillian Haggarty would put the Lakers in prime scoring position. Sophomore Kira Wright would answer the occasion as she would slap the ball to left field and push a run across to make the even the score at 1 a piece.
The Bears would score two more runs in the bottom of the second that would see the scoreline elevate to 3-1 Bears. At this point in the game both starting pitchers and defense would come alive and take over. Both teams would struggle to get runners aboard and this would favor Potsdam having already established the lead.
A leadoff triple from Lakers Lillian Haggerty in the top of fifth would prove to be the next opportunity for the Lakers to score. But a heads-up play by Potsdam's third base would catch the Lakers trying to steal a run as the Bears stifled the Lakers' chance.
The Bears would add one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to balloon the lead to 3 as the Lakers faced a 4-1 deficit going into the top of the seventh.
The Lakers would get two runners aboard with the tying run at the plate, but again the Bears' defense would respond as they would catch the final out of the afternoon in a sweep of the Lakers on their home field
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Lakers will continue their road trip in SUNYAC conference play against Morrisville next Tuesday, April 29th in a double header starting at 3:00 PM.
