Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Lakers Fall in SUNYAC Opener

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Field Hockey returned home hosting the SUNY New Paltz Hawks for their first SUNYAC matchup of the season. Looking secure their first conference win, the Lakers were eager to find their legs on offense, but this proved to be a demanding task against a fiery Hawks squad. New Paltz found the back of net first and attached a 2nd goal to the scoreline in the final minutes of the first quarter. After settling in on defense, the Lakers' connected front kept the score standing at 2-0 for the entirety of the second and third quarters, surviving 12 corner attempts by the Hawks. Despite a persistent effort throughout the match, the Lakers eventually fell 3-0 to SUNY New Paltz in the 4th quarter.

THE BASICS

Final Score:

Oswego 0 (2-7, 0-1 SUNYAC)

New Paltz 3 (5-4, 1-0 SUNYAC)
Location: Laker Turf Stadium | Oswego, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED

A strong center pass by Sophia Prianti started the Lakers off on a forward foot, but the Hawks were quick to jump on passes in the midfield. Play remained neutral in the beginning minutes until New Paltz found some momentum, penetrating Oswego's circle and firing two back-to-back shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Krautheim rejected these attempts, and the Laker defense steped up to shut down the Hawks' first penalty corner opportunity of the match. An eager New Paltz offense continued to apply pressure, but Oswego stood tall, matching their excited energy. A failed defensive clear by the Lakers returned possession to the Hawks and resulted in the first goal of game 9:17 into the opening quarter. Remaining on offense, New Paltz controlled the pace of play in Oswego's zone, attaching a second goal to the scoreline in the final minutes.

Now trailing 2-0, the Lakers were determined to find their legs in the 2nd quarter, but a fiery New Paltz squad wasted no time securing two consecutive corners 0:07 seconds into the quarter. Unable to capitalize on this series, the Hawks did not let up, peppering Krautheim with compilation of shots on the following play. As play continued to get underway, Oswego spared no effort trying to produce a solid offensive opportunity, but that proved to be a demanding task against the Hawks' connected defense. As halftime drew near, the speed of the game began to pick up with both teams raring to be the next to contribute to the scoresheet. Despite this liveliness, the game entered intermission with the scoreline standing 2-0.

As play resumed, New Paltz picked up right where they left off, on offense. Their hard press made it easy to contain the Lakers in their circle, earning another handful of unsuccessful penalty corners in the beginning minutes of the third quarter. An assertive performance by junior defenseman Julia Alvey disrupted multiple drive attempts made by the Hawks, taking some pressure off the shoulders of Krautheim. Oswego made consistent substitutions in the minutes following, aiming to keep fresh legs on defense, as New Paltz showed no signs of letting up. This paid off as the Lakers survived all 8 of the Hawks' corners, sending the game into the fourth quarter stagnant at 2-0.

The start of the 4th quarter mimicked the others, but this time the Hawks were finally able to capitalize on their 16th penalty corner of the game just 0:50 seconds in. Unphased, the Lakers put their nose to the grindstone, pushing back with an offensive surge of their own. Although this rush did not yield a goal, the Lakers managed to slow up New Paltz on their voyage back up the field. Despite Oswego's valiant effort, they would unfortunately fall 3-0 to SUNY New Paltz.
