Lakers Fall in Nail Biter to New Paltz

New Paltz, NY - Oswego traveled to New Paltz to face off against the 7-1 Hawks. In a big game for the Lakers identity, they kept close with the Hawks all game long. In an extremely close game, the Hawks pulled off a win with a last second shot by Brianna Fitzgerald.

BASICS

Oswego 58 (3-6, 1-2 SUNYAC)

New Paltz 60 (8-1, 2-0 SUNYAC)

Hawk Center | New Paltz, NY

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both squads came out energized and ready to go in this one. Sarah Hirschler got the scoring started for the Lakers with a 3-point jumper. Oswego started to pull away a bit at the three-minute mark courtesy of 2 good free throws by Hirschler and a tough two by Giavanna White-Principio. New Paltz would battle back, tightening the Laker lead from six to just two. Oswego would end the quarter with a Madison Guillory finish at the rim and held a 4 point lead.

Scoring slowed down a bit as the second quarter got under way. There was only one bucket in the first 7 minutes. It picked back up as New Paltz squared the game away at 14 with a layup by Brianna Fitzgerald. New Paltz came right back at them. New Paltz did create a 5-point lead in the final seconds of the half but Madison Aikens would hit a trey to cut the New Paltz lead to just 2. Guillory and Aikens would lead the scoring for Oswego with 5 points apiece.

New Paltz came out guns blazing, as they had their biggest lead of the night at 9 in the opening minutes of half number two. Oswego tried to battle back with a balanced attack with 4 different players scoring in a row but New Paltz kept their foot on the gas. This deficit wouldn't go away for the Lakers but life was shown with 26 seconds left in the period. Semaiah Williams would get a jumper to fall and the lead was only seven for the Hawks.

Oswego erased the lead quickly. Jazmyn Lewis kicked off the fourth quarter offensive attack with a 3-ball followed by a Zhane Holmes layup. White-Principio scored three straight and then a Bri Weaver shot from way downtown knotted this contest up at 46. Just like that, Oswego found their way back in the game and stunned the Hawks. 5 minutes was left and momentum was wearing green and yellow. New Paltz got themselves together and began to score again but Oswego still hadn't cooled down. Semaiah Williams would hit yet another 3-pointer and Sydney Hoefs had a pair of free throws to give Oswego a 3-point lead. But just as the game had gone all night long, the Hawks hit a very timely 3. Squared away at 51. Williams kept her excellent fourth quarter going with a jay but New Paltz, yet again, had an answer. The Hawks led by one. Hoefs swished home a free throw to tie it back up. After two free throws by the Hawks, Williams answered the call tying it back up at 58. The Hawks Brianna Fitzgerald would put the game away in the end though as she scored her 28th and 29th point with 6 seconds left. The Lakers final buzzer beater was not able to fall and the Hawks sealed the win.
