Geneseo, NY - The Oswego State Men's and Women's Cross Country teams fought hard in the Mike Woods Geneseo XC Invitational, with the women's team taking home 7th, and the men's team finishing 17th.
How it Happened
The Women's 6K Championship kicked the meet off at midday, with NYU taking 5 of the top 7 finishes. The Lakers women landed two finishes inside the top 30, with senior Kyra Pellegrino (Rochester, NY / Marist University (NCAA ) finishing with a time of 22:53.6 in 19th place for 19 points, and junior Elena Gaffney (Freeville, NY Lansing High School) with a time of 23:02.8 in 26th place for 26 points. Both top times are good to etch their names in the Oswego record book, as they now represent 9th and 10th of the fastest Women's 6K times in Laker history! Senior Gia Engel rounded out an excellent effort by the Lakers with a strong time of 23:31.2, taking home 40th place and 36 points.
The Men's 8K Championship followed, with top placings split fairly evenly amongst Geneseo, Amherst, and RPI, each of the three programs finishing with two runners in the top 7. Oswego was led by Junior Noah Melita (Holtsville, NY Hannibal High School), whose time of 26:58.3 was good for just outside the top 50 finishes, taking home 44 points for the Lakers. Josiah Adams (Philadelphia, NY Indian River High School) added a strong showing to his freshman campaign with a time of 29:11.6, taking home 107 points for Oswego.
The Lakers also had runners competing in the Open 6K for the women, as junior Sophia Shatynski was the first Laker to cross the finish line, as well as freshman Jordan Janicki rounding out the top 50 finishers.
What's Next
The Laker runners will now have some time to prepare, as their next meet is scheduled for Halloween (Oct. 31st), where Oswego looks to add strong finishes at the SUNYAC Cross Country Championships, held by Oneonta.
