Lakers Drop Double Header to #14 Case Western

Cleveland, OH – It was a challenging start to the 2026 season for the Oswego State Lakers, who dropped both ends of a season-opening doubleheader to #14 Case Western Reserve University on Friday at Nobby's Ballpark. Despite flashes of offensive potential and a resilient effort in the late innings, the Lakers couldn't overcome big innings from a potent Spartans lineup, falling 12-7 in the opener and 7-1 in the afternoon.

How it Happened
The first game of the afternoon began with a statement from the Oswego bats. The Lakers jumped all over the nationally-ranked Spartans in the first inning, plating four runs to take an immediate lead. After Case Western chipped away, Oswego responded in the third with two more runs, extending the cushion to 6-2. TJ Harrington and Daniel Winchester were instrumental in the early surge, while Emil Sander proved to be a constant threat at the top of the order, drawing three walks and scoring a run.

However, the tide turned in the middle frames as the Spartans' potent lineup found its rhythm. A four-run fourth inning followed by a two-run fifth allowed the hosts to reclaim the lead. The Lakers refused to go quietly, pulling within two runs in the top of the eighth after Matt Carner helped spark a late rally. Unfortunately, the comeback hopes were dashed in the bottom of the frame when the Spartans capitalized on a few defensive lapses to plate three insurance runs, sealing the 12-7 final.

The second game proved to be a much different affair, as the Lakers' bats were silenced for much of the afternoon. Starting pitcher Ryan Mayer faced a tough challenge against a Spartan squad carrying momentum from the opener. A five-run second inning by Case Western Reserve created an early mountain for the Lakers to climb. Despite the deficit, the Oswego pitching staff settled in, with Mason Sands providing four solid innings of relief to keep the Spartans at bay through the middle of the game.

Offensively, the Lakers struggled to find the timely hit in Game 2. Emil Sander and Brogan Olson both turned in multi-hit performances, but the team left several runners stranded in scoring positions. The Lakers finally broke the shutout in the top of the ninth inning, showing the grit that has become a hallmark of the program. While the 7-1 scoreline didn't go their way, the Lakers matched the Spartans' hit total for much of the game, indicating that the potential for a breakout is there.

What's Next
The Lakers will once again take on Case Western tomorrow afternoon for a single game starting at 12:0 PM
