OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Women's Soccer hit the pitch this afternoon to officially kick off their 2026 campaign against the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles. With both teams coming off a successful preseason, today's matchup was set to be a physical battle to be the first in the win column. And that it was. A hot start by the Lakers would force Brockport to find their footing on defense early. Despite starting in their end, the Golden Eagles didn't hesitate to find some quality offense. An initial chance on net by them would be rejected by the top woodwork but would be followed up by a successful first tally just minutes later. From there, Brockport's momentum continued adding two more goals in the second half. Oswego generated several promising looks—particularly off transition and thanks to a few late-game substitutions—but could not break through the grips of the opposing goalkeeper, ultimately falling 3–0 in a hard-fought season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
As play opened, the Lakers got ahold of the ball for a quick turn on offense, but the Golden Eagles were quick to settle in on defense finding their legs in transition. A foul in the midfield called against Kyla Sustad slowed up Brockport's offense but did not stop Kaitlyn Spring from getting off a strong shot from the center of the box. Spring's shot would be rejected by the crossbar. In the following minutes, the Eagles continued to churn out a few quality looks on net, dominating possession. A quick 2-on-1 by Brockport at the 17:49 mark would be the key to netting the first tally of the game. Not letting up, the Eagles continued to test the Lakers at both ends of the field, but Oswego persevered gaining multiple odd man attempts in the latter minutes of the first half. Despite their efforts, the score would remain 1-0 in Brockport's favor, heading into halftime.
Determined to level the scoreboard early in the second half, Oswego took every chance they had in the beginning minutes. A solid corner kick sent cross box, and a follow-up rebound shot would test net minder McCane, but neither would evade her grips. Following this series, the Eagles wasted little time regaining their first half intensity in transition. Responding well, the Lakers pressed Brockport with some lockdown defense, but a deep pass allowed opposing striker Marino to run down a second goal at the 51:33 mark. Now trailing 2-0, Oswego began to make some substitutions in hopes of staying fresh in the final quarter of the game. This would pay off, allowing the Lakers to unleash another series of shots on McCane, but this spurt was not enough to disrupt the Eagles' rhythm, finding a third and final goal with 7 minutes remaining. Oswego fought hard until the final buzzer but eventually fell 3-0 to a fiery SUNY Brockport squad.
