The foundation of having students strive toward athletic excellence is based upon the philosophy that programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete help to enrich other aspects of their lives. As part of a commitment to athletic excellence, Oswego State supports 24 intercollegiate sports for men and women, coaching and support staff, comprehensive athletic facilities, an athletic communications department and athletic training facilities.
Over the years, Oswego has built a reputation for excellence on and off the playing field. Laker teams compete in and are affiliated with several athletic conferences. Oswego competes under NCAA Division III auspices with most teams competing in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. Women's ice hockey is a member of the Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL), golf is an affiliate member of the Empire 8 Conference and wrestling competes in the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC).
