The Oswego State hockey team swept its home-and-home series with Utica College as the Lakers defeated the Pioneers 5-3 on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Romney Field House.
Oswego State, ranked ninth in the USCHO.com Division III preseason poll, never trailed in the game as they opened the scoring 6:01 into the game when J-S Richard (Lorraine, QUE) scored on the power play.
The Pioneers tied the game just less than four minutes later as Jared Allison (Blairsville, PA) countered with a goal while Utica was on the man advantage.
Freshman Tony DiNunzio (King City, ONT) put the hosts back in front at the 11:04 mark, 1:07 after the Pioneer goal.
The teams traded goals in the middle period with Sean Kotary (New Hartford) scoring for Oswego State and Ryan Webb (White Lake, MI) scoring for Utica.
In the third, senior Don Patrick (Fulton, NY) scored the eventual game winner. On the play, Andy Rozak (Mississauga, ONT) picked up an assist, as he became the 42nd player in Oswego State history to hit 100 career points.
Utica trimmed the deficit to 4-3 midway through the period, but Oswego State junior Jocelyn Dubord (LaChenaie, QUE) added an insurance goal.
Oswego State goalie Brett Leonhardt (Waterloo) improved to 2-0 on the season as he finished with 28 saves.
Rich Rager (Sewell, NJ) made 39 saves for the Pioneers.
Oswego State finished the game going 3-for-10 on the power play, while Utica College went 1-for-10.
The Lakers had defeated the Pioneers in Utica, 7-4, on Friday.
The Lakers will play another home-and-home series with an ECAC West team next weekend playing at Elmira on Friday, Oct. 29, and hosting the Soaring Eagles at Romney Field House at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30.
