Oswego State wins in final minute

Oswego State scored the final four points of the game, all coming in the final minute, as the Laker women's basketball team slipped past Buffalo State 61-57 on Saturday, Jan. 15, at Laker Hall.

With the win, Oswego State remained undefeated at 11-0 overall and 5-0 in the SUNY Athletic Conference. The Lakers, who have already set a school record for most wins at the start of the season, are now one win shy of tying the mark for the longest winning streak in school history.
They led by as many as 14 in the opening half, but the pesky Bengals ended the opening 20 minutes on a 12-1 run closing the margin to 34-31 at the break.

Buffalo State eventually took the lead, but had to rally to tie the game with under two minutes left. They pulled even on a basket by Tawan Slaughter (Buffalo), but the Lakers got a layup from Kristin Sterling (Oneida) off a nice feed from Sarah Lombard (Saratoga Springs) with 52 seconds remaining to take the lead for good at 59-57. Lombard iced the game with two free throws with just one second remaining.

Lombard led the Lakers with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Lindsey Marquit (Castleton) added nine points.

Amanda Beniot (Deerfield) had a huge game for the Bengals with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Jacey Brooks (Machias) contributed with 14 points.

Oswego State returns to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 18, heading to Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles at 6 p.m.
