The Oswego State Laker women's basketball team took the lead two minutes into the game and never relinquished it, defeating the Potsdam Bears by a score of 83-57. The Lakers improve to 14-2 with the win and 8-2 in SUNY Athletic Conference competition. The struggling Bears fell to 1-16 overall and 0-9 in conference play.
The Lakers were led by
Sarah Lombard (Saratoga Springs). The freshman had a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes. Kristen Sterling (Oneida) finished with a double-double tallying 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Bears shot just 31 percent from the field, paling in comparison to the Laker's 42.7 percent shooting.
Kara Miller (Ontario) led the Bears with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Laker men first to defeat nationally ranked and previously undefeated Potsdam
The men?s squad took it to another level to defeat the previously undefeated Potsdam Bears by a score of 84-71. The Bears, ranked 13th nationally, came into the game riding a 16-game unbeaten streak, among the longest in the nation. Oswego jumped out to a 43-24 lead at the end of the first half, burying the Bears and eliminating any chances of a comeback.
With the win, the Lakers improved to 15-3 and 6-3 in SUNYAC play. The Bears fell to 16-1 and 8-1 in SUNYAC play.
Ahmad Mims (Syracuse) had a team-high 22 points in the winning effort. The junior swing-guard dominated in the paint, getting most of his points on the inside and adding three blocks to his stellar performance.
Nick Perioli (Liverpool) complimented the effort with 21 points, two steals and
five assists.
In the losing effort, Bears' center Eldon Harris (Albany) scored a game-high 24 points. Adding four blocks and 14 rebounds (10 offensive), Harris recorded a double-double.
The Bears shot just 12.5% from three-land as compared to Oswego's 57.1% from behind the arc. Mims and Perioli were a combined five-for-nine from beyond the three-point line.
The Lakers play next on Tuesday at Utica College. The non-SUNYAC meeting starts at 6 and 8 p.m. for the women and the men, respectively.
