Extra-inning win gives Lakers a split with Buffalo State

The Oswego State softball team scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull off a 3-1 victory over Buffalo State in the second game of a doubleheader to earn a split with the Bengals.

The win came after the Bengals scored a 10-5 win in the opening game of the doubleheader on Saturday, April 16, at the South Athletic Complex.

Willow Eyres (Selkirk) got the Lakers going in the top of the eighth with a one-out single and then came around to score on an outfield error. Oswego State then added an insurance run on fielder's choice by Sarah Castaldo (Oswego).

Laker pitcher Susie Burt (Cuba) then kept the Bengals in check in the bottom half of the inning, giving the hosts the win. The win was Burt's third of the season as the junior allowed seven hits and struck out four tossing a complete game.

Melissa Balsavage (Cheektowaga) suffered the tough loss for Buffalo State, going the distance and striking out five.

There was plenty of offense in the opening game as the teams combined for 15 runs on 22 hits.
The Lakers led 2-1 after the opening inning thanks to a two-run home run by Eyres.

Buffalo State took the lead for good in the fourth as Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park) led off with a solo homer and the Lauren Wright (Westfield) added a two-run triple later in the inning.

The Bengals broke up a tight game in the final inning batting around as they scored six runs.

The Lakers are now 10-8 overall this season and are 4-4 in the SUNY Athletic Conference. The split put Buffalo State at 18-8 overall and 7-7 in the conference.

Oswego State will be on the road on Tuesday, April 19, heading to Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles.
