Burt tosses shutout as Lakers split with visiting Oneonta

Junior Susie Burt (Cuba) tossed a five-hit shutout to help the Oswego State softball team earn a split with visiting Oneonta as the Lakers won the second game of the doubleheader by the score of 2-0. The Red Dragons started the day by taking the first game 2-1 plating an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning to break a one-all tie.

After the two games played on Friday, April 22, Oswego State moved to 12-12 overall and 6-6 in the SUNY Athletic Conference. The split put Oneonta at 13-11 overall and 8-4 in the conference.

Burt sparked the Lakers in the second game allowing only five hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts. She also received plenty of support from her defense that played error free ball. The win put Burt's individual record at 4-3 this season.

Oswego State scored in the first as Julie Barlow (Canastota) brought home Brittany Eckhard (Hannibal) on a ground out. The Lakers then added an insurance run in the fourth as Colleen Carmon (Port Jefferson) scored on an error.

Carolyn Agle (Eden) finished the game going 3-for-4 for Oswego State.

In the opening game, Oneonta scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh as Erin Hodges (Watervliet) stole second and was also awarded third on an interference call. She then scored the deciding run on a throwing error after getting caught in a run down.

The Lakers had tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Barlow scored on a ground out after starting the inning with a single.

Heather McBride took the loss for the Lakers, allowing only one earned run and striking out nine.

Amy Herba (Johnstown) picked up the win for the Red Dragons, yielding one run on six hits with six strikeouts.

Oswego State will be at the South Athletic Complex again tomorrow, April 23, taking on conference opponent New Paltz for two games starting at 1 p.m.
