Oswego State pulls off sweep of New Paltz

The Oswego State softball team pulled off a sweep of visiting New Paltz to remain in contention for a berth in the upcoming SUNY Athletic Conference playoffs. The Lakers won the opener by the score of 3-2 and then completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory in the second game on Sunday, April 24, at the South Athletic Complex.

Oswego State improved to 8-6 in the conference and are now 14-12 overall. The loss knocked the Hawks to 6-10 in the conference and 16-14 overall. The Lakers have six conference games remaining with the top six teams advancing to the tournament.

In the opening game, the Lakers plated a pair of unearned runs on the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out the win. Heather McBride (Mechanicville) earned the win on the mound for the hosts as the senior tossed a complete game allowing eight hits and striking out six. The win squared her record at 6-6 on the year.

Jillian Burns (Wynantskill) belted a pair of doubles for Oswego State as the freshman went 2-for-3.

For New Paltz, Jen Born (Walworth) had a triple with Emily Nyman (Islip) going 2-for-3.

In the second game, the Lakers exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth inning. The big hit in the inning came off of the bat of sophomore Carolyn Agle (Eden) as she belted a two-run double with two outs. Missy Constanza (Hannibal) had a good game at the plate going 3-for-4 with a run batted in.

Susie Burt (Cuba) had her second straight solid outing on the mound as the junior allowed just one run on seven hits. She has allowed only one run in her last 14 innings.

Liz McPartlan (Huntington Station) had a pair of hits for the Hawks.

Oswego State will play a pair of key SUNYAC games on Tuesday, April 26, at Geneseo.
