Oswego State holds Hartwick scoreless in doubleheader sweep

Coming off of a pair of tough conference losses, the Oswego State softball team got back on track by sweeping Hartwick College on Saturday, April 9, at the South Athletic Complex.

The hosts won the opening game by the score of 1-0 and then completed the sweep with a 6-0 win.

The two non-conference wins puts Oswego State at 7-5 on the season, while the Hawks dropped to 1-15.

Game one featured a pitching battle between Oswego?s Carolyn Agle (Eden) and Hartwick?s Kathleen Morgese (East-Syracuse). Agle finished on top with her first complete-game shut-out of the year limiting the Hawks to just four hits and striking out nine in her seven innings. Agle, with the win, moves to 3-1 on the year with a team-best 3.38 ERA.

Missy Constanza (Hannibal) drove in the only run of the game in the third inning scoring Willow Eyers (Red Creek), who led off with a double for the Lakers.

Hartwick first baseman Paige Harris had two of the Hawk?s four hits in game one.

In the second game, the Lakers exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first to take control.

Taking advantage of untimely walks by Hartwick?s starter Trish Shorey (Lake Region Bridgton, ME), Agle would score what would eventually be the winning run on a bases-loaded free pass to Julie Barlow (Canastota).

Constanza also contributed with a bases-loaded single that drove in the second and third Oswego runs in the first inning. The junior finished her afternoon with a fifth-inning to left-center as she went three-for-six with four RBI and two runs in the doubleheader. Defensively, Constanza also caught two Hawks stealing.

Susie Burt (Cuba) got the win for the Lakers in game two, improving her record to 1-2 on the year.

Burt pitched six scoreless innings and struck out two. Heather McBride (Mechanicville) pitched the last inning for the Lakers, striking out two to wrap the game up.

Shorey got the loss for the Hawks going only two innings, allowing five runs (four earned runs) and walking three.

The Lakers will return to the field on Monday, April 11th for a doubleheader with St. John Fisher starting at 4 p.m.
