The Oswego State Men's Soccer team lost a defensive war today against Buffalo State. Both teams scored late in the first half, which ended up being the only points scored today. The battle between conference rivals came to an end in the shootout period in which Buffalo prevailed 3-0.
The Lakers lone goal was scored at the 39:46 minute mark on a ball that was crossed into the box by junior Cooper Brehm (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) to freshman Dave Stewart (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby North), who redirected the ball into the opposite corner. Buffalo did not waste much time on the equalizer as their goal came four minutes later off a corner kick by junior Casey Cushing (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) that found it's way through the crowd of defenders to junior Clint Holcomb's (Clifton Springs, NY/Victor) foot, where he slammed the ball into the back of the goal.
With regulation and double overtime periods coming to an end, the game came down to a penalty kick shootout. After hitting the ball off the post in the first attempt, Buffalo made its next three consecutive kicks. The game winning goal was kicked in by senior Rich Gordon (Hamburg/Hamburg).
The Lakers won't have to waste time to avenge the loss as they play host tomorrow afternoon to Fredonia State at 1pm.
