Lakers win back-and-forth game on Roorda's goal in overtime

The Oswego State men's soccer team led twice in the game, but needed Mike Roorda's second goal of the contest with six minutes remaining in overtime to defeat St. John Fisher 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Laker Practice Field.

The Lakers grabbed an early lead as Jason Popovich curled a shot from a corner kick that deflected into the net off of the far post on a windy day in Oswego. St. John Fisher scored the next two goals, as Ryan Downey took a pass from Josh Foster and scored on a low shot, then Jason Tartick beat Oswego State keeper Shaun Sessa with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Oswego State tied it in the second half when Chris Carra slotted home a rebound from Pat Hurley's initial shot. Mike Roorda then scored from inside of the penalty area after a cross from Jim Mertz was settled by Andrew Hale. The 3-2 Laker lead didn't last long as Tartick added his second of the game with 13 minutes remaining in the second half.

Both teams had great chances to win the game at the end of regulation and in the first overtime period, but a close-range header from Fisher's Downey went over the cross bar and a low shot by Oswego State's Greg Blette hit the goalpost. An apparent Fisher goal in overtime was waved off as the Cardinal player was ruled to have interfered with the Oswego State goalkeeper.

A cross from the right side by Jason Popovich was headed in by Roorda to win the game. Sessa finished with seven saves for the Lakers and Adam Durst had seven saves for St. John Fisher.

Oswego State won its third consecutive game and is now 9-7-1 overall. They will play one more non-league contest, at Utica on Friday at 7 p.m., before playing at Brockport in the play-in round of the SUNYAC Tournament. The game against Brockport is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at East Rochester High School.

St. John Fisher fell to 2-15-0 on the season with the loss.
